Re: Non food related TV
There is an evening of old children's tv on BBC Four tonight - acutal programs and a couple of documentaries. Repeats, of course.
Right now Bagpuss is on.
I didn't realize that Professor Yaffle was based on Bertrand Russell, whom Oliver Postgate once met.
Bagpuss was, of course, the precursor to Repair Shop... : )

Bagpuss came out when I was at college, and I missed it.
I first heard of it in the 1980s when I had my wisdom teeth removed. I came round from the anaesthetic, and the woman in the next bed said “oh Sue, you look like Bagpuss*”, so I had to find out.

Lunchtimes when my children were small. I liked Bagpuss least of the programmes.

Ooh I loved Bagpuss!
We went to a mini exhibition in Canterbury during the pandemic in which they had all the original figures.
Not sure about the Clangers revamp. Was amused by the clips they showed of one of Postgate's political rants in one of the original episodes. Might send it to my fellow politics book writers... or not as they are both under 35 so will have fallen solidly between the original and revamp.
My parents, in their old age, loved watching lunchtime children's programmes.

My mother didn't have TV until she was in a home with mild dementia. She absolutely loved Rosie & Jim and we always had to watch it.
I think the best children's TV ever was Trumpton, Camberwick Green etc.

There’s a cafe/bar in St Mary’s on Scilly, that used to be the fire station, it’s called Dibble & Grub.

I loved Trumpton etc. too.
Was less keen on Andy Pandy (Probably looking very old fashioned when I was little, but that was clearly not consciously the issue when I was 4) and Play School.

I think I grew up in the golden age of children’s tv. Trumpton, Camberwick Green, the Woodentops etc then Blue Peter and Magpie, even Grange Hill. I used to love the five minutes before the early evening news, Magic Roundabout, Roobarb and Custard, Captain Pugwash etc.
Anyone with grandchildren know what today’s equivalent are?

The sad thing is BB, that most children's programmes are shown CBBC and so you have go choose to go there rather than catch them late afternoon as you used to even if you didn't have children, or children of a certain age. I've tried to get GD to watch Blue Peter and she likes it but we never remember. There are some lovely programmes for smaller children, Peppa Pig, In the Night Garden etc.
When we lived with my grandmother for a while after returning from Australia in early 1970, she, my mother and I avidly watched Hectors House before the news every evening . The highlight of some very boring days. I was 16 .

I find In the Night Garden rather creepy (not that I have ever watched a whole 'episode'. It's on just before BBC Four starts - same number on my tv.) It's a poetic title though.

I absolutely adore the tune at the end as he sails off in his little boat.

Bagpuss now lives in an upstairs bay window on Jetty Street in Cromer … we wave to him every time we go there

Re: Non food related TV
Coming to the Drama channel on Thursday is Whitstable Pearl. As the name suggests it’s set in Whitstable (although other locations in Kent are also used). It’s about an ex police officer who now runs an oyster/fish restaurant and she’s also a private detective.
The opening shot is drone footage over the town and I recognise quite a lot as I lived there way back in the 80s, in fact the flat I lived in has been in several scenes. The theme song is also good.
It’s a very easy going series and stars Kerry Godliman, who was also in Trigger Point. It was previously on the streaming app Acorn and there’s been two series so far and I think a third is in production. If anyone is looking for something like that to watch I recommend it.
Cheers

I've not been watching Shetland, or Vera, but I've found a couple of book series by Anne Cleeves, who wrote the books the series are based on. One is Inspector Ramsey, based in Northumberland, and the other is Matthew Venn, a detective, and the series is set around Barnstaple in Devon. I've enjoyed both. I may start on the Shetland books soon.

Has anyone been watching the repeats of classic plays/books on BBC4 on Wednesday evenings. Two weeks ago it was Anna Karenina , a 1962 version with a pre Bond Sean Connery as Vronsky, Last week it was Cold Comfort Farm.
This week it is Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland in The Railway Station Man

I've just watched Scoop, out on Netflix today. Very well done.
