Re: Non food related TV
I never really watched the Roy Marsden Dalgleish, I like Marsden and saw him on stage, but he wasn't quite my image of Adam when I knew the books as well as I did then.
Similarly, John Le Carré apparently said that if he'd known he had any chance of getting Alec Guinness to play the role he would have described George Smiley quite differently, they were quite apprehensive when they asked him to approve the casting but he was delighted. Similarly I've read the book Tinker Tailor, seen the orignal tv series and the short film made about 10 years ago, and the only time the character of Percy Alleline made sense was when Toby Jones played him in the otherwise slightly unexciting movie, though they did get all the sets spot on.

i doubt lee child would have described 'reacher' differently if he'd thought that tom cruse would be playing him!

Re: Non food related TV
The miscasting of the century, well not really since he had the rights the actor, Alan Ritchson, who plays him in the series is more like Lee Child describes him in the books.
Another miscast was John Hannah as Rebus, he was too much of a ‘pretty boy’ and didn’t have the lived in face described by Ian Rankin, Ken Stott when he was cast was perfect.
Cheers

Re: Non food related TV
There’s an odd thing about Rebus - having read the books in order he’s only described in the very early books, after that I think it’s only comparative - paunchier, more wrinkled etc. But when I went back to the early books I thought the description was much more like Rankin himself than Stott, who did get the character spot on.
Finished watching series 9 of Shetland, enjoyed it though possibly one suspect too many and a few loose ends

If anyone’s into disaster type films then give La Palma a try, it’s a four part miniseries on Netflix and it reminds me of the 70s/80s productions. Although it’s fictional the underlying theme isn’t because it could actually happen if the volcanic eruption did cause the side of the volcano to calve.

I have been watching and quite enjoying Three Pines on amazon prime. Alfred Molina in a gentle Canadian detective series.
I came to this via food... I was looking for an idea for leeks and Cantal cheese and came across a recipe that had been reconstructed from something in one of the series of books featuring a Inspector Gamache on which the tv programme is based. Pretty convoluted...

So this will do until I hold out for series 2 of Wednesday
(Could be waiting a while.)

Before I fell asleep on the sofa,I watched episode 1 of the Box of Delights we discussed on chat
As I suspected, I knew the book well - I’ve been saying “time, tide, and buttered eggs wait for no man” - ever since, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen the tv version, it really is good. Not sure if I’ll get round to the rest though.

I've never heard of this, but have recorded the series and watched ep.1...
Not sure what to make of it yet

I'm surprised it's a 'gentle' detective series, some of the books are anything but gentle in terms of the crimes committed, although Three Pines itself is a kind, healing community! I'm hoping this gets onto one of the Freeview channels eventually, but it was cancelled after the first season so may just disappear.herbidacious wrote: ↑Sat Dec 21, 2024 7:18 pm I have been watching and quite enjoying Three Pines on amazon prime. Maybe gentle isn't the right word. I am not sure what it. Hopefully you get to watch it and can help me out there...
There is a lot of sadness in it. And murders of course. But little shown violence. There have been two murders but they are not horribly graphic. I am a bit sick of violence on tv.
I'd rather not watch a detective thing tbh. There seem to be too many dark dramas/thrillers and detective things on terrestrial tv - it's either that or competitions or fly on the wall things or C list celebs talking about things as if they were experts but more often than not aren't (Ch5). I no longer have CH4 and ITV though - they dropped off my system - so maybe it's just BBC and Ch5.
I am in the market for a well-written witty drama or something slightly fantastical (also well-written and witty but without extreme violence.)

I’m saving Strike to binge, the review in the Guardian says the plot is a bit over complicated but it’s something you can immerse yourself in, and the central partnership is great.
Sounds about right based on the previous series which I’ve enjoyed, the last one was a tad weird.

Re: Non food related TV
Has anyone seen the Aussie comedy programme 'Fisk' starring Kitty Flanagan - comedian and actress - and she wrote the series!!
It's about a suburban law firm that does probate and wills - funny and entertaining and it's been exported to lots of countries including UK. Kitty F. lived in UK and worked with comedians there for some years and she's appeared at the Edinburgh Festival, so you may possibly have heard of her

I’m still enjoying Matlock on Sky Witness. Kathy Bates is great.
Re: Non food related TV
I found this book the hardest to read, its format was unusual as the book and the corresponding text messages within the game were on opposite pages, but yes very complicated plot. Likewise I really enjoy all the Strike books and tv series. I’ve just started watching this one.Stokey Sue wrote: ↑Sun Dec 22, 2024 11:12 pm I’m saving Strike to binge, the review in the Guardian says the plot is a bit over complicated but it’s something you can immerse yourself in, and the central partnership is great.
