It's almost like stealing a well known artwork isn't it! Limited places it can be sold on and enjoyed.

Yes, what the heck do you do with 950 cheeses that aren’t worth much if not traceable.?Earthmaiden wrote: ↑Fri Oct 25, 2024 6:51 pm It's almost like stealing a well known artwork isn't it! Limited places it can be sold on and enjoyed.
Re: Stolen cheese….
They'll probably turn up on various market stalls, perhaps?
Although 950 are a lot to shift that way ...
ETA to add this piece in The Grauniad ... https://www.theguardian.com/food/2024/o ... am-thieves

Re: Stolen cheese….
I have a colleague who used to get cheap Black Bombers at Christmas and offer them for sale...
Might they export it for the Asian market?
When in Japan they seemed keen on European cheese boards (albeit made up of exotics such as Babybel and Port Salut).

I’m hoping NYD’s bank did the credit check because then they will have liability.
It seems a strangely elaborate heist if all they can do is sell it cheap in markets in the run up to Christmas, Jamie has a point Brits can look out for it wherever they go.

It all sounds like a Two Ronnies sketch. The Phantom Cheese Stealer from Hackney Wick or somesuch.
There’ll be lots of Farmers Markets on a Sunday. I might start with those if I was Piggy Malone.

Destined for Russia or the Middle East is the latest theory... (or presumably some foreign market that will ask fewer questions for whatever reason? Clearly not anywhere in the EU!)
I am totally on Neal's Yard's side of course, but it still seems odd that they would dispatch the cheese before payment. But apparently that's the Cheese Way.

I think sending goods with an invoice to be paid on receipt of acceptable goods is fairly normal, but you'd expect credit checks done either by NYD's own export department or (perhaps more likely) their bank, and nobody has mentioned this, which seems odd to me.

This whole story just doesn't add up to me.
Either it's been very distorted or somebody within the suppliers has no business sense.

Re: Stolen cheese….
The latest Evening Standard article says that the thieves impersonated a known and reliable wholesaler, so that explains why they were trusted
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/ ... 90462.html
It also occurs to me that as with drugs busts, the massive figure quoted is the final retail value, but NYD will have been owed only the wholesale cost, quite a bit less though a lot

If we’re hunting cheese thieves shouldn’t we be looking a bit closer to home …
… Miss Mouse … your name would seem to be a dead give away … can you vouch for your movements on the date in question … ???
