Left over chip shop chips ...

Post by KeenCook »

We have a lot of left over chips and I'm wondering what ideas you have for them?

I think the only thing I've done with them in the past is make a tortilla/Spanish omelette type dish, which is delicious, but are there any other interesting uses for them out there??

Thanks :thumbsup

I've only had them as next morning hangover food (and it's been a while!). I quite liked them reheated in the microwave - perhaps with grated cheese melted on top if feeling really decadent - I think they'd work with any 'loaded chip' type thing or just reheated and eaten with an egg.

If you had the patience to cut them into cubes, you could make Parmentier potatoes:

I'd probably go the frittata/Spanish Omelette route.

We chuck ours out on the lawn. The hedgehogs scoff them up overnight when they're around and any left in the morning are usually eaten by the crows and jackdaws.

The gulls polish ours off on the back lawn … that way they don’t have to go to Cromer and steal them from the folk on the prom

Being inland we don't get that many gulls (or not in the garden anyhow). The corvids fulfil the same role.

That's really thoughtful! :D

Glad you found a way to use them, KC. I suppose an addition to soup would be another idea.

I'm well inland and see hoards of gulls locally, especially in winter when people throw more bread into their gardens.

If you have an Air fryer you can heat and crisp chips up in that - better than getting soggy in the MW!!

They tend to hang out in the local fields around here rather than visit the gardens. They're mainly flocks of common gulls, especially in autumn/winter. It's interesting actually- common gulls were more or less completely absent when we lived in Reading, but we had lots of black-headed gulls, which are much less frequent around here. I do love the way the local patch is so different. Currently, our wintering pink-footed geese are returning in hoards. They spend the night over on the Solway coast and then fly inland to feed. It makes me very excited as we never saw them where we lived before. Conversely, I miss the red kites (they've not yet established themselves in Cumbria...) :)

No air fryer! But last night we crisped/warmed them in the oven and had them with our lamb burgers (the Waitrose ones are excellent and included in the 3 for £12 multibuy).

Yes, I agree about not warming them in the MW.

Scully, love the idea of an aloo saag - I can't remember when I last made it.

Me neither! I might well do that next time (especially as our resident hedgehog has just gone into hibernation) :thumbsup

Which Waitrose ones please, chunky chips or skinny fries?

An Indian restauranteur said they always buy them frozen for such dishes. Good idea.

MM, it's the lamb burgers that are in the deal, which we had with the reheated chips that we did in the oven rather than the MW.

The lamb burgers are really good, and there are some nice fishy options as part of the multibuy too.
