OH has spent the day in Ely, singing as an emergency replacement at a lunchtime recital. I was left at home...

... so I thought I would use up some bits and pieces I've had left over. I made a Mary Berry "Bakewell sponge". It has a tin of "Cherry Topping" in the middle and a small amount of it on top, restrained by a ring of glacé cherries. I have used up the topping and the cherries, so more room on the shelf.

The cake is hidden away, and will appear tomorrow, if I remember!! :o

I have a cold, and cannot taste or smell anything, I hope everything is still fresh enough. One of the eggs came out of the shell as a smelly beige slush! I congratulated myself that I always crack eggs into a teacup individually before adding them to a cake mix :)

Aww, it looks wonderful, aero! I know it will be hugely appreciated.

I crack eggs separately too. The horror tale at school of the girl whose eighth egg cracked into a Christmas cake mixture was bad, never left me.

Oh no, not you as well. Is anyone not ill or on sick duties at present?

The cake looks wonderful.

Another big baking spree here. One tray of Blitzkuchen and two of onion cake.

All turned out very nicely.

We will meet friends today, so the onion cake will be dinner. The Blitzkuchen is for us to celebrate Axel's birthday on Sunday.

Disappointing focaccia last evening. Very slow to rise, and then it seemed to give up. Made it exactly as before. It’s still a bread, just, but it could also pass as a biscuit. :(

I made a 50% rye loaf the other day. I just subbed wholemeal rye for wholemeal wheat flour in my usual mixture, adding a generous amount of yeast. It ‘half rose’; not quite ‘half loaf half biscuit’, but definitely in the realm of ‘stodgy brick’. It’s OK with soup…

I have subsequently found there’s a separate programme on the breadmaker for rye baking, and a special paddle too, which has taken me ages to find.

If in doubt, read the instructions.

Save some for me please. My last scone attempts were a total disaster, I'll leave the baking to more competent bakers.

Yes please! I'll have two! :D

I made a "quick strudel" yesterday and when it came out of the oven I realised that I had used the shortcrust pastry instead of the puff pastry.

It's very tasty! Not really disappointed. I've just had some soup with the "biscuit" focaccia. The strudel will be eaten later with clotted cream :)

Not just me then. Phew. I do make passable pastry which some find a trial. I cant see the difficulty with pastry, a young visitor decided to help me with pastry leftovers, his fond papa cringed, young child was smashing it around like bread, bashing it with the rolling pin, the pastry was fine, very nice in fact. It's a mystery.

They look superb, Suffs! :thumbsup
I thought they were Käsebrötchen (cheese rolls) at first. :P Just because over here you see Brötchen far more than scones.

Axel's daughter misses German breadrolls. Well, she is over here at the moment and will have her fill, I guess.
