Tell me about it, I’ve just been to the butchers, 1lb sausages, six slices of bacon, two chicken thighs and some pies…….£28! It’s good meat, all with local provenance but still it was £28.

That's shocking. Even scarier is where does the 'cheaper' meat come from? Is it safe?

Olive oil is a shocker, Sainsbo own brand Spanish used to be very nice and also reasonable, that too has shot up in price of course and doesn't seem to taste as it did.

Just been to Lidl myself, currently Italian specialities. I got a small jar of artichoke hearts in sunflower oil for £1.99 and 30g of dried funghi porcini for £1.29

Got another small jar of the excellent piquillo peppers (99p, regular stock a real bargain I think). To be found with olives and gherkins.

I’ve also decided that their crackers are among the nicest of all, got a repeat of the rosemary crackers I’ve had before and some sea salt, there are several varieties. Only 89p for 185g, which is quite a lot.

In Lidl on Friday they had Garden peas in tins for 9p ! I bought 2 tins, opened one today and noticed it said on the label 'from rehydrated peas' they were a bit greeny/grey but tasted ok. I mixed some with cubed swede and a few green beans. Good for a filler or maybe mushy peas... Can't really complain for 9p a tin (baked bean sized tin). I'd buy them again.

Our local Iceland has pulled out of The Range and set up a new shop called The Food Warehouse. It opens next week but the big draw for me is that there is a 10% discount for Over 60s every Tuesday. Do all Icelands do that?

They used to do the discount in my local Iceland, but they took down the posters, so I assumed the offer had gone

Be aware that Food Warehouse (I have been to the one in Tottenham Hale) has more basic groceries than frozen food and I think a slightly reduced range of frozen food compared to standard Iceland stores, but well worth a look

I regularly visit Iceland on Tuesday because they stock my tipple. I have a discount (25%) card and always visit for bargains anyway.

Has anyone used Too Good To Go?

It's a method for supermarkets/cafes/sandwich chains to get rid of surplus food at the end of the trading day. You pay £3-£4 upfront on a credit card or PayPal (the bag contents are meant to be worth £10) and collect the 'surprise bag' sometime after 8pm that evening. Or at least that's how it's supposed to work.

We tried it for the first time yesterday, more out of curiosity than anything. I did the buying online and OH was agreeable to driving out to collect at the appointed time. Ten minutes before collection time, we received a text message to say the order was cancelled. Apparently no surplus food available! This is a regular occurrence according to others who have used or tried to use this app. Others say all they've had is stale bread rolls or 4 boring egg & cress sandwiches.

We're trying again tonight, so will report back on success (or lack of) tomorrow.

Binky, it’s very much luck of the draw. My son sometimes uses it when staying with his girlfriend in York. They did a Greggs one last week and got

Four individual sandwiches/baguettes of differing fillings
Four sausage rolls
A cheese pasty
Four donuts and
Four bottles of a juice type drink.

An absolute bargain as long as you can eat all the food. I know that they froze a chunk and it fed them that night and lunches the next day.

I can’t get anything around here, I think we are too far away from anywhere that participates to make it worth the fuel to go nd pick up.

Friends in Gloucester have so been lucky with their local craft baker.

The Olio app also has food going out of date, and round here small businesses, particularly bakeries will put as few as 3 or 4 items on it for immediate collection, on a fpgood day you can get a free sourdough loaf

They are getting rid of stuff that can’t be sold for the price of the postage. We got some jam and flour. The jam is quite nice. It’s the second lot we have had..

We Are Fair Trade is the phoenix company that has succeeded “Traidfair” which was put in administration last year.

They all look good. I am familiar with Olio where you can fetch the items. Sadly, I don't like things being delivered as there's nowhere to leave them if I'm out.

OH brought back our surprise bag last night. I could tell he was amused as he put it down on the table and said "It's rubbish".

Inside was a pack of pita breads (all broken), a two-slice lemon cheesecake dessert, and two packs of bacon burgers. We don't eat pork.

The cheesecake was nice and was valued at £3.10 so we got exactly what we paid for. No bargains here!

That’s the trouble with things that are surprise packages, I don’t do veg boxes either because I know I’ll get a build up of stuff I don’t really like, and there’s only me to eat it.

I do buy the “wonky” veg at Morrisons, which often just aren’t the right size for the class 1 definition, I actually prefer smaller Conference pears and larger salad potatoes, which is all the difference from the top price ones
