I think Betty's in Yorkshire, which I have been to a few times over the decades has suffered from being turned into a formula
Cf. Patisserie Valerie in London, which was wonderful up until the 4th or 5th one opened

The last curd tarts I bought were from Thomas's.

Snap.....!slimpersoninside wrote: ↑Sat Aug 17, 2024 4:30 pm On Wednesday I finally got my wish to eat a Fat Rascal at Betty's (Harrogate). I'm pretty sure I will never grace a Betty's again, I'm really not a Betty's person, just the once was enough.
Once was enough about 11+ or so years ago......very underwhelmed - could not see what the 'fuss' was about.

Just for once we have visited an establishment which has an online prescience. The first couple of pages are taken up with a sushi menu, the latest Cypriot craze. Both the salmon and prawns are imported https://chrisbluebeach.com/wp-content/u ... N-MENU.pdf
I had the Salmon Poke Bowl, Deb had Sea Bass.

Looks nice Moira I would be tempted by the tuna tartare, except that the craze for truffle mayo has also reached Cyprus, yuk

Yesterday at the Swan next to the Globe:
Grilled polenta, baby spinach, tomato concasse, Parmesan tuile, garlic oil
sticky toffee pudding with a very generous dollop of clotted cream
Today at Franklins, East Dulwich:
a starter of feta, green bean, watermelon and olive salad with new potatoes on the side
the most delcious butterscotch tart with thick (clotted?) cream.

Hello from Gut Steinbach in Bavaria. We had a lovely dinner in Stuttgart last night and an easy journey this morning. Shared a snack plate for lunch of bread and cheese. For dinner I had the meatloaf - it was so so light and OH had schnitzel. The
Potato and cucumber salad was something we need to recreate!

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
We are in Northumberland with our Kiwi cousins, doing some walking and eating well.
We went here last night
https://brewisbeer.co.uk/
We have been several times before and thought the cousins would enjoy it.
They did.
We had a few different beers, the gluten free member of our group was easily accommodated and also had a choice of beer styles.
There is usually a street food truck in attendance. Last year on my birthday we had Korean food, yesterday it was very good artisan burgers.
The only bum note was the glass of wine I fancied with my food.
The wine list is merlot / pinot grigio/ a rosé of some sort and a prosecco.
The merlot was awful, thin and sharp.
Yes, I accept it's my fault for ordering wine at a brewery.
Hoping for fish and chips tonight if we can find one that does GF.

The Alma at Crystal Palace:
For me, a starter instead of a main:
Roasted beetroots, whipped goats curd, black olive & hazelnut crumb (It was very pretty. Dark pink and bright green.)
which as just a starter, meant I could have a dessert!
Cheesecake, cherries & lemon gel
T had a vegetarian Haggis with roast dinner veg.

That does look very good. I’ll have the cod loin please … what did you have?
Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Happy anniversary CJ.
I’ve walked past there a number of times and thought it looked good. Definitely good to know. We can even get a bus to Ripon!!! The number of places we can get to by bus from here is very limited.
On the list.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
I had crispy chicken, Belgian waffles, maple syrup, picked and poached egg. J had the Francesinha which is a Portuguese sandwich of thick bread, fried steak, cheese and chorizo baked then covered in cheese, fried egg and gravy. I had a cocktail of dark and stormy. Dessert for me was warm parkin with a butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream J had a rhubarb and custard creme bruleé and sorrel ice cream.
It is pricey but so nice. We only go there for special occasions.
Other places worth trying are The Silva Bells, Portofino and So Bar & Eats, also The Royal Oak. Chimes is the best place for scones!
With choir having a branch in Ripon it means we visit quite regularly.

We went here again on Saturday, with the Kiwi cousins.
A seafood platter to share, with a couple of sides including extra oysters.
Fab.
We had our own private dining room, with a view of the sea.
It was a (heated) shed actually, there are 4 you can book.
