Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Yesterday I had lunch at Cafe Mandalay in Shoreditch, which some of you will have seen elsewhere. Recommended. It’s a breakfast, sandwiches (looked very good, made to order) and coffee place that is run by a Burmese couple and also has just the sort of curry and rice or noodle dishes you do get for lunch in Myanmar.

Today final birthday treat, lunch with friends at the recently relaunched local institution the Blue Legume, mainly Cypriot food. The set lunch, £14.95 for 2 courses (£10.50 for one) with about 8 choices for each was far more than I could eat. I had falafel with cacik and chargrilled chicken kofte with pilaff and grilled peppers and tomatoes and a little pot of sauce. The new menu doesn’t seem to have made it onto the website yet.

I had a really delicious broad bean and pea risotto in a local pub, the greyhound.

The wonderful Magpie Cafe in Whitby
We started with Lindisfarne oysters.
The sweetest and freshest I have had in a long time.
Then J had monkfish in beurre blanc with champ, and I had turbot with garlic crevettes, samphire and new potatoes.
Each portion of fish was about 250g.
The whole thing was fabulous.

How lovely, WW.
Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Thumbs up for good Yorkshire food. The Magpie is wonderful, as is Trenchers which is a similar fish restaurant near the station.
I hope you are enjoying our beautiful county.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
We have been visiting Whitby for many years, we brought my Kiwi cousins a few years ago and they enjoyed too.
I have seen Trenchers but not tried it. A work colleague who is also a regular visitor really likes it.
Shame The Star Inn The Harbour has gone, but I did notice the last time I ate there, the majority of customers seemed to order burger and chips rather than the delicious seafood on offer.
For fish and chips we prefer the chippy on Silver St.

Yesterday whilst viewing a pad, we ate at The Sun https://www.suninnbentworth.com/_files/ ... b68865.pdf I had a Cibiatta BLT and pesto - great combination. OH had Gyros beef (delish) proper Greek pitta with feta olives salad and chips. Great pub, very old, full of character and would be our local if the pad works out. Hungarian female barmaid, very friendly and the locals did not bite ! !

That’s looks soooo good, and I’m not a huge fish person. I’d quite happily have the dressed crab and salad. Where are you staying WW?

Leaving this morning, sadly.
Re: Where have you eaten out today?
After three and a half weeks summer holiday, three and a half thousand miles, we eventually managed to have a meal a sitting outside. In York. A two course lunch menu, £20. I had belly pork with crispy kale and a bean salad, and sea bass with a saffron risotto. Lovely .
And yes, we waved to Herbi’s T when we were near Copenhagen, and Uschi when we were near Fehrman. And Wuppertal!
I’m still catching up with everyone’s news, but hope everyone is ok.

We ate here last night with my Dad https://www.theitaliangreyhound.co.uk/
It was really very good. We shared the arancini and carpaccio to start and then I had the cod, asparagus and prawn risotto. Delicious.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
After viewing a pad in Chieveley we lunched again at the Lebanese House in Newbury - very tasty and very fresh mixed starter. It was so filling we did not need anything else to eat. Also found Griffins butchers on the watery bridge and treated us to 2 super looking pork chops and a Newbury sausage and a venison one each. The bag of bones was trimmed when we got home and the bones are now in the freezer until the sun is next out and my stock pot goes on. Enough meat on them for us both for a meal each.
Boy am I tired this evening. Strangely the jeans I wore today have made my operation knee hurt ! My feet are tired out too. I digress sorry...... mind is tired too.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
yesterday I had fattoush in Cafe Kick on Exmouth Market.
Today I had a potato, green bean and poached egg salad in a cafe in Bromley.
Both nice but difficult to eat lettuce with one hand. I am not very motivated either tbh.
Today seems to be typo (or rubbish auto correct) day.
Today's cafe...
...and a fave restaurant we considered going to today

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Last Sunday was the Camberwell arms.
Perhaps I over hyped it to myself after the first visit as this one impressed less, but still good. I think what might have put me off was the stingy portion of (paid for) bread) with neither butter nor oil.
artichoke vignarola with broad beans, peas, polenta
almond cake with strawberries and chantilly
The dessert was very good.
It's funny how the vibe changes if you move a little closer to central London. This place was mainly full of lstyle conscious late 20 and 30 somethings. Almost everyone had their phones out on the tables and the couple next to us picked up their phones whenever there was a lull in conversation. Actually they didn't talk much at all, come to think of it. How can people not see this as rude. (What's on my phone is more interesting than you/I need to be stimulated at all times.) Perhaps if it's mutually done it's not rude. I am becoming so very middle aged in attitude...
Last night we went to a new to us place in West Dulwich. Was a little put off by the slightly pretentious web site and some online comments, but we enjoyed it.
https://www.dulwichlyceum.com/
We had about 5 small plates. and shared a cherry bougatsa. (Quite expensive for essentially mezze? Or is that the going rate.) Food was very nice and the service (one very young man) was good.
Ever since we moved to south London (2002) this site has had an Italian restaurant. I am pretty sure the one that was there in 2002 had been there for years. (My 40 something ex driving instructor was a chef there before he became a driving instructor. He was a mine of information about the Italian community in London. He used to go out with the daughter of the then owner of Terronis on the Clerkenwell road )
Anyway, glad there is something new and good there now. There are so few decent places to eat out round here post-pandemic.

Giggleswick, again. But for regulars, beware, they’ve changed the menu. No fish pie , however the salmon was delicious (but not very big portions, skinny fries were needed, and gorgeous ).
Sadly we were caught in the massive traffic problems on the way home.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Sis & myself went on a coach trip to Brid the other week, (myself deputizing for Mum, as she had a tummy bug & didn't feel well enough to go).
Pier 6 near the harbour. Not cheap - but OMG some of the BEST fish & chips I've ever had!
Thoroughly recommend!

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Last night’s meal was lovely. Outside in the area outside a church.
Ingredient origins were explained to us as each dish arrived.
https://maven.dk/
STRACCIATELLA & PEACH Salads from Kieselgården, tuile, and piment oil.
COUSCOUS Hand-peeled Danish peas, chanterelles, grilled pea bouillon & summer truffle.
Today lunch was on a floating platform on the canal at Cafe Kayak. Cheese board for me and veggie burger for him. He helped me out with the cheese.
Dinner was in an Italian restaurant. I just had parmigiana melanzale. Delicious smoked almonds to start.
