Where have you eaten out today?
Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Wasn’t the concept of a ploughman’s lunch a marketing wheeze by either the milk marketing board or similar cheese federation ?
BB
Edited to add……yep 1950’s milk marketing board campaign to increase cheese consumption.

Yes … and the idea of adding meat products came later as an ‘upgrade’ which cost more, and therefore the idea of naming it for the employer rather than the employee was an obvious choice.

Lunch for two at the Ace Cafe London. Very pleasant!

We ate here:
https://ploussardlondon.co.uk/
We were advised to shared 4-5 items. The portions were very small. The tartlettes were about 2cm in diameter, for example, and there were two of them. But it was all utterly delicious. The best meal I have had in a long time. The menu has gone off line so from memory (difficult because not straight forward thing), we had
homemade bread (delicious and warm)and butter
chicory and pear salad (with a very nice dressing)
jerusalem artichoke tartlettes
chanterelles with egg yoke, Comte (cheesy cream sauce) - lots of umami flavour in there too.
salt baked celeriac in a very delicious creamy sauce which involved pine nuts
Then T has Roquefort with homemade biscuit (a big one broken) and some sort of jammy thing.
I had dark chocolate choux bun which had some ice cream in the middle and a salted chocolate mousse sauce.
It was rather expensive but ten times better (but not ten times the price) of anything we've had recently.

We plan to eat out next week for OH's birthday. We hope to go to the old St James Restaurant, now Villa Bianca. It will be interesting following recent reports. The food is good, if a bit expensive, but some people who hae been seated near the kitchen have said that they can hear the chef f-ing and blinding, a la Gordon Ramsay. When they complained, the chef came out and swore at them. I wonder if he's still there?

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
A pub in Peckham - the Angel Oak. Clearly the same chain as the Blackheath one the other week. I ordered the same thing as I did in Blackheath because it was so delicious. This version had 50% more food (too much really) but was not nearly as nice.
It was also very cold. I think a lot of places stopped putting the heating on or started only having it on very low when the first energy hikes came and have never put it back on. Still high I know, but I suspect since they've worked out a way to cut costs that they can get away with, they will continue.
No doubt this one would be warmer if it were busier. We were the only people there.

I was in Basel this week and was taken to Der Teufelhof for my brother-in-law's 94th birthday meal https://www.teufelhof.com/en/eating-dri ... t-atelier/
My choices were perfect. I had the goats' cheese tart to start, and then the fish main. No pictures I'm afraid, but do take a look at the menu!

Worth waiting 94 years for!

Haha, yes, it really is terrific - the other restaurant in the hotel is eye-wateringly expensive!!

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
For some reason I couldn’t get the menu to open yesterday, I think I might have gone for the tart and I’d certainly have gone for the fish, you don’t often get char.
Looks excellent!

We went out for lunch. The village was quiet. We went to Blue Check Restaurant in Bushey. It turned out that we were the only customers! Most unusual,as Friday lunch is usually popular. Maybe everyone was put off by the threat of a storm. But the food was good. OH had venison pie followed by profiteroles. I had a salmon and leek fish pie, followed by crème brulée.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
We discovered a new Mexican place near us last night that has taken the spot where there used to be a Venezuelan cafe. Had quite a light meal of costillas de elote: 'fried sweetcorn ribs mayonnaise and white cheese, slightly seasoned with lime and chilli powder.' Difficult to eat but delicious. I must get some of the chilli lime powder. I assume it's this (sort of thing)

Really good.
T had guacamole and home made tortilla chips.
Then we both had cachapas with black beans, white cheese and fried plantain
The vegetarian options were a bit limited but will definitely go back.

Tajin is great, with the price of admission just to sprinkle it on avocado and corn, I got mine because it is an ingredient in a watermelon and feta salad. Somehow greater than the sum of its parts.
Apparently also good in a Virgin/Bloody Mary

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
We had a lovely time yesterday.
Went into Nottingham with some pals and had an hour or so in the jazz club, then we went for dinner here
https://vichotelbeeston.co.uk/
One of our favourite places.
The food is absolutely not fancy. It's home cooked proper pub food.
We all had haggis, neeps and mash with onion gravy and it was fab.
A bargain at £12 each too.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
T and I had a very nice anniversary lunch at Fischer's on the Marylebone High st. Maybe not quite the right vibe for a romantic lunch but that was not essential!
https://www.fischers.co.uk/
I had twice baked souffle (a generous size compared to Le Fromagerie) and T had courgette schnitzel. We had spiced creamed spinach and Austrian potato salad on the side. (The latter was very tasty. Less keen on the 'spice' in the spinach.)
T has apfelstrudel for dessert, and I had Salzburger trifle.
Would definitely like to go back some time.

Re: Where have you eaten out today?
Thanks. It's just a getting together one...
The restaurant definitely had a what I imagine to be Viennese old-fashioned vibe (not sure if they had newspapers on sticks...) but not stuffy.
