Sounds great Rocky, though I’m not sure I’d go for the crab and sprout combo

I don’t think you’d be alone in that!

Last night we had a volunteer Christmas celebration at a local micro brewery (nice beer lick lips :thumbsup ) We all contributed to the food and all the leftovers have been brought back to the Rescue today.

So, I am dining out - at Pumpkins Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre. ;) :D lick lips ...

Friday, Restaurant Claire'Marais, St Omer. Delightful service after unpleasantness with the hotel. The food was a bit French does vegetarian (not particularly fancy but thoughtful).

https://www.clairemarais.fr/en/

Lunch was an omelette au fromage in a 'pub' in Calais.

Lunch today butternut squash tart tartin in Cote, Sevenoak: Sage, salted caramel and red onion tarte tatin topped with whipped goat's cheese and toasted almonds, with a green salad, then a cafe gourmand: coffee, raspberry macaroon, a mini madeleine and a tiny profiterole. All very nice.

I am now looking at the Cote at home veggie Christmas box... Somewhat tempted. I do want to do some (proper) cooking though.

We had a lovely meal in Ask. I think I last ate there about twenty five years ago. I won’t leave it so long again. Value for money (food/service/drinks) it was excellent.

Cafe Kick, Exmouth market: a really nice and not too heavy spatzle with onions, chestnut and a surprisingly delicious grilled open capped mushroom.

Franklin's East Dulwich for lunch. Glamorgan sausages with a curiously spiced tomato and aubergine thing.

We ate here https://thechoptankrestaurant.com/baltimore/ yesterday. Very nice - we all had crab cakes and they were fabulous.

Looks wonderful, Rocky.

Brussels sprout salad works if they are finely shredded and nicely dressed.

We had a light lunch in Ole & Steen in Clapham/Battersea: avocado and pea on rye with a sliced hard boiled egg and pea sprouts, then half and custard-y Danish pastry (shared with T).

Had lunch here today:

https://nocirestaurant.co.uk/

I had cacio e pepe.

Also had a modest (we shared two vegetarian curries, some rice and a garlic naan) curry at Gurhka's in Sydenham on Monday.

Herbi, I'm interested to see there's a branch in Richmond - funnily enough next door but one to Chez Lindsay, a French restaurant that was founded and owned by my classmate, Lindsay, until she finally sold up last year.

I had this: Roasted squash and chickpea salad, charred onions, superstraccia, puy lentil dressing

at the Hare and Billet in Blackheath. It was really very nice indeed. It came with charred little gem lettuce which was surprisingly nice. A bit of a game changer for a lettuce hater.

I felt a bit virtuous choosing this, but then, I also had...

Double chocolate and marmalade steamed pudding, white chocolate custard

Not as rich as it sounds but possibly not quite worth the presumed calories. Nice though.
No dinner for me... (I didn't have breakfast.)

We went to the Piccadilly, Caerwys, for lunch - the snow on the hills was breathtakingly beautiful.
I chose a ploughmans, which came with a scotch egg, sourdough bun and Wagyu 'butter', plus crisps, cold meats, cheese and small Caesar salad. Now, I was prepared to give the scotch egg to hub, as I do not like hard boiled egg yolks (nasty rubbery things!) but, OMG, this had a warm, oozy yolk, a pulled gammon 'outer' and a perfectly crisp crust. I have been converted!
The warm bun was equally delish, slathered in the Wagyu 'butter' (and I normally do not have butter on anything, even toast). I brought the charcuterie and cheese home.
I had to leave the Caesar salad :D

The Ploughman's has certainly evolved over the years!

A pub I used to go to (and managed for a fortnight while my friend the landlady was on holiday) would’ve called that a ‘Farmer’s Lunch rather than a Ploughman’s … the farmer being better off and able to afford meat rather than just cheese. Mind you, ploughmen have become much better paid over the years …

However few farms actually plough their fields nowadays … the emphasis is on maintaining the structure of the soil, not chop it up … they don’t plough the fields before they scatter any more. Many farmers don’t even own a plough!
