OH makes a mean caponata from a recipe an Italian American friend gave us. It doesn’t sound that likely but (certainly that version) makes a lovely pasta sauceherbidacious wrote: ↑Tue Aug 13, 2024 2:39 pm Last night I had what seemed to turn out to be caponata. (Whenever I have tried to make this, the balance of sweet and sour has not been right, but coincidentally it was bang on with my homegrown aubergine concoction yesterday.) I wasn't sure what to have it with and ended up having it on a slice of toast with some cheese.
Any suggestions for the leftovers? (How to eat it rather than how to make it into something else.) I usually just have it with some mozarella.
I had gazpacho for lunch today. (Getting in the zone for being in the Andalucia in a few weeks ) Bought, though, a while back. Will make a batch if it's still the weather for it next week. I will be making some more cucucumber and yoghurt soup tomorrow, or Friday.

I had two jam doughnuts.
Re: What are you eating today?
I keep suggesting that OH should buy doughnuts when te goes to the shop for done odds and ends … he never comes back with any and I can’t buy them myself … I’ve tried but my years of self control won’t let me

I don’t like doughnuts (I really don’t)
I went to the new café in the park and had an imam bayeldi sandwich essentially a baked aubergine and hummus in Turkish bread, very nice but doesn’t imam bayeldi usually involve parsley? Also a house made cucumber and mint cold drink. Sat in the sun and people watched.
Tonight a big salad platter including potato salad with ham and salami from a tapas selection.

Re: What are you eating today?
I do.
I really wanted a frankfurter (can't remember last time I ate one). I bought some and had one in a crusty baguette with English mustard. Very salty. Strawberries and ice cream later. I was out at a meeting all evening so that was it. I did have fruit for breakfast.
I bought some 'melt in the middle' fish cakes on offer in Sainsbury's. The picture showed the usual ones containing parsley sauce but the label said they contained 'fish pie sauce'. Looking forward to see how it differs from parsley.

My knee-jerk reaction to that question was ‘no’ a few minutes ago, but thought it best to Google first. The online recipes pretty much all use a parsley garnish, but you’re right, the majority add it to the sauce as well. Having had a successful aubergine season so far ( ) I am working through favourite recipes. I haven’t got around to home-grown Imam Bayildi yet. It’s always required bought aubergines previously, but I can’t remember whose recipe I use. Pretty sure it’s a female writer. Claudia Roden maybe? It’s not in The Pauper’s Cookbook is it? Anyway, I don’t recall that recipe having parsley in it, but maybe I just omit it.doesn’t imam bayeldi usually involve parsley?

I am not keen on doughnuts either.
I bought Spanish omelette to have with the aubergine concoction, but ended up just having some 'salad' potatoes.

The best doughnuts in the world are to be had at the fish and chip cafe on the beach at Dunwich.

Looks good Suffs!
There are doughnuts, doughnuts and donuts.
The jam filled delicacies one used to get in proper bakers shops or make oneself are lovely. Ring donuts at a fair or seaside aren't bad if eaten immediately. The things sold as doughnuts in supermarkets these days are very inferior and heavy - I can take or leave- usually leave. I do hope that those who don't like them have tried good ones before deciding.

A food scientist posted elsewhere a picture of his frankfurter lunch
We agreed it was an excellent source of collagen - better and cheaper than fancy bone broth
Tongues firmly in our cheeks - there's no special advantage to consuming collagen despite the influencers, though it's all protein of course

A freshly made doughnut is a real treat but I'm not keen on the supermarket ones and yes please to an IKEA frankfurter. If DS2 is visiting the store he tends to pick up a pack of the frozen ones so I can enjoy one too.
Duck ramen tonight, not made ramen for ages so really looking forward to it.

I would LOVE duck ramen this evening - yum.
Instead we are having a use up vegetable pie in a cheese sauce topped with sliced potatoes and served with some streaky bacon that also has to be used up.

Ah Ramen......wot we had last night - but in my sort of Asian spag bol - basically a larb meat mixture, I used beef mince but prefer it with pork or chicken mince - good 'n spicy with plenty of zingy mint & coriander, lime juice, then in with the ramen, give a good stir fry & let all cling to the noodles....so much lighter in this weather.
Tonight maybe salmon or maybe prawn curry ( sauce already done & sitting in the fridge ) - the day is still young...........

Lunch was something we haven't had for ages - had half a bag of spinach that needed using up. Cooked it in a frying pan with a lot of butter, and s, p and cumin, and poached eggs on top. Very yummy

I’m prepared to pay good money for a nice doughnut. The ones sold in bags of half-a-dozen for fourpence (perhaps I exaggerate slightly) aren’t worth fourpence IMO.

Re: What are you eating today?
Absolutely, BM!
Drat, I was hoping that eating frankfurters would do wonders for my skin .
I've been out to lunch at the lovely Abbey Organic Farm near Cirencester. A lovely fennel and something soup with delicious rye bread and butter. I copied my friends and bought a doggie box of the mixed salads to bring home (didn't know they did that). It will accompany the remaining frankfurters later. Tomorrow I shall try the fish pie sauce.

Re: What are you eating today?
I've been to London today with some of the Fitsteps girls.
Someone mentioned going to the 5th floor of the Royal Opera House where we had a light lunch ( I chose a crab salad) and a glass of wine.
We then stopped at a coffee shop selling only 1 type of pastry....Pastel da Nata, before making our way to the champagne bar at St Pancras International for a glass of bubbly....just because we could.
We all declared a delightful day was had.

That sounds fab Patsy. You’ve more stamina than me! I’m now nearly 16 months into not drinking and I can honestly say I don’t miss a glass of wine but doing something like that might tempt me.

Sounds like a great day patsy.
Spag bol for us tonight.
I really enjoyed the ramen last night, not the best photo but I was pleased how it turned out though the egg yolks could have been runnier. Leftovers for lunch.
