I rather like the sound of these - if anyone has, or intends to try them, do report back!

Re: Aldi/Lidl specials - recommendations
Now that someone has mentioned Christmas goodies, let me tell you that Aldi has Christmas Cinnamon Knots (biscuits) which, although not quite as good as those from Waitrose, are considerably cheaper. Waitrose £2, Aldi £1.49.
They also have chocolate covered marzipan rounds with fruit and liqueurs (plum, cherry or orange) which are about 1/3 of the price of the Anton Berg chocolates they are imitating. I haven't actually tasted these yet, so can't comment on quality!

What are they? That page is a mess, I can't make head or tail of it, but I think I saw mince pies mentioned; Iceland have been good recentlyEarthmaiden wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 4:11 pm I rather like the sound of these - if anyone has, or intends to try them, do report back!

I bought some Lidl chocolate covered cherry marzipan things for T. He ate them in one sitting, more or less. (I think he left one...) So I assume that either they were nice or he was just in the mood/hungry/they were 'addictive'.
Current week is 'supersize'. Not for me...

Thanks but yuk, I don't like mince pies or Christmas pud "messed about" with things like cheese and puff pastry - fig and port ok, in fact a a fig, port, and cheese puff pastry thingamajig without the mince meat sounds rather nice!Earthmaiden wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 6:23 pm Sorry, SSue. Had a quick peek at the Lidl week - not madly exciting, but they have amaryllis bulbs, theirs are usually good value though I wish it were possible to buy the bulbs without a flimsy plastic pot and an inadequate amount of desiccated potting medium, just a bulb or two in a paper bag is all I need (I know you can order them from nurseries and probably get them at Crews Hill but it's a question of scale)
In a different department, they also have some Ukrainian wine

If you enjoyed Bovril flavoured crisps back in the day, I recommend Aldi Specially Selected beef wellington or steak and ale crisps.
They taste the same although I found the beef wellington saltier.
We didn't enjoy the turkey and cranberry ones.

I only like/buy plain crisps and Lidl Deluxe ones are up there with Kettle and Tyrells and cheaper.
When I was last there, I found a pack of (dried) Spatzle, so bought that and tried it last night with some Tesco 'Swedish' meatballs. I think I prefer tagliatelle as the carb part unless I'm missing something?
Saw an empty space where the Spanish sweet biscuits with OO were

We've been eating ours gradually ... hard to resist them!!
I haven't had Lidl's spaetzle, only the ones my sister uses when we're staying with her in Switzerland.

The fresh spaetzle I bought from there was nice enough. I have some of the dried but not started on it yet. Basically spaetzle is nothing special?!? But then nor is pasta unless freshly made (imo.) I bought the spaetzle for nostalgia reasons (it was that or pizza when eating out in Karlsruhe!)
I think probably first had them in Göppingen on my first trip abroad/foreign exchange, aged 15. They were introduced to me as dumplings which put me off as I hated English dumplings at the time. Not sure if the mistranslation was mine or theirs.

Yesterday at Lidl I noticed that they are stocking pecorino - not grated, as during the Italian week, but in a wedge. There were also a lot of extra goodies for Christmas, like smoked duck slices ... I'm going to get some next time as I had already spent too much And a side of smoked trout.
Re: Aldi/Lidl specials - recommendations
I can't recommend Aldi's salted caramel chocolate truffles enough! They only have them in the run up to Christmas so I always stock up

I got the bus to Aldi at lunch time and picked some up. Will try to desist until nearer Christmas, but I have a feeling I might have to try some sooner rather than later. (Would be good to know if I need another box?!? ). I also bought some 'stollen biscuits'. These were pretty much flat stollen Tasted a bit doughy (uncooked) but I rather like that. Not sure they are good value for money though. I do need to stop buying sweet stuff. And indeed Christmas stuff that is best eaten now.

Flavour of the week: Japan. Is that a new one? Can’t imagine that being popular in this neck of the woods. Can I be bothered to go and look? (I am interested, but not optimistic, and tired. And would have to walk…)

I've no tnotice Japan before though I think some of the items might be in the generic Vitasia "oriental" brand, which they have had before (Sunflower was quite sniffy about it)
Fairly good selection of store cupboard bits, it I pass a Lidl I'll maybe get stuff like panko crumbs and ponzu dressing.

They include Uncle Ben’s on the list…
Re: Aldi/Lidl specials - recommendations
As part of their Christmas range, Aldi have Horseradish sauce with pink peppercorns. I have bought a jar.
Also look out for their flavoured butters - the 'truffle' one is recommended.
We are also converts to Lidl's deluxe pate range. Currently on Venison and Armagnac.
I am leaving the stollen, mince pies, chocolates, cake, etc for you lot
I'm kind like that!!

Are these special things that they don't normally have?
