Aldi/Lidl specials - recommendations

When we had the outlaws for a no cook nibbles evening yesterday, they went mad for the hard goat cheese (forgotten its name) and the garlic and parsley bruschetta from Aldi. Most of the speciality crisps were left. The salamis from Aldi were ok, but the star of the show was the La gloria Riojana from Lidl charcuterie. And Finocchiona from Tesco.

A bit late, I started my pack of Spanish almond cookies from Lidl, good

I've tasted 2 wines from the October wine selection, a white from Gascony called Confidence, v good and a French GSM that was a bit lighter in flavour than I expected, really nice red for food.

I got T to take me to the slightly bigger Lidl today. I think it's been recently 'done up'. Much nicer than my very local one. It makes me see why people actively want to shop in Lidl. (You would not if they were all like the Sydenham road one.) They have a greater range, well laid out and well lit. The staff seemed happier and more friendly too. Pity it's a PITA to get to without a car. Basically takes as long on the bus (which still involves quite a bit of walking) than just walking - about 35 mins.

There are a few places round here that are like that. We are just not connected by bus to nearby places to the south and south east.

Alpine and Germany week starts today. It actually says from 17.10! I shall nip in anyway at noon on the way back from my flu jab. Or might ask T to take me to the bigger one tonight. However it's all a bit meaty. And I do have some stuff left from the last Germanic week...

I'd buy the fresh spaetzle if they have them, and maybe some mustard.

Picked up some Austrian Linzer Keksi at Lidl this morning, without reading what they actually were. I imagined they might bear some resemblance to Linzertorte, which I love.
What a disappointment. Horribly sweet, half covered in chocolate with some sort of unidentifiable hard "jam" in the centre.

I assume it is meant to be Middle Eastern / Eastern Mediterranean but it doesn't inspire me, Mediterranean style tempeh? maybe a fusion too far

I get less excited by this sort of thing as we have 4 Turkish supermarkets on our high street that have a lot of this sort of thing and more.

Yes the tempeh is a bit on an anomaly in this context. Aldi do some weird tofu flavours. Perhaps they are following suit.

Yes, living in little Istanbul here reduces the attraction, there are some things that seem good - the half size jar of tahini for example, not specially cheap but a full size jar can set to concrete before it is finished. The sun dried tomatoes look good, and the Tunisian olive oil (Morrisons briefly had Tunisian evoo, good). But I’m a bit dubious about most of it not being specific to a place or cuisine such as Cypriot or Lebanese.

Also, of course, for those without the easy access to the ethnic shops themselves it might be interesting.

btw Lidl do do a slightly more luxurious stollen bites with rum. I did think I'd had them in a box before.

I went to the Tottenham Court Road Lidl yesterday, I realised that one of the odd things about it is that there doesn't seem to be a Middle of Lidl, it has quite a different stock list I think; lots of fruit & veg, massive bakery, big booze department

But anyway, among more mundane things I got the Tunisian evoo and the sun-dried tomatoes (huge bag, 250g) from 1001 delights, and a pack of German pumpernickel, they use dto stock that year round, I miss it.

Yeah but I can't do rum in that format. It's alright cooked in things. (Maybe my logic seems odd to you, but that's how it is.) The rum stollen bites did seem nicer. The texture as much as the flavour. They felt more moist and seemed a bit fresher. Rather a lot of icing sugar, though.

They had none of the 1001 delights stuff in the one on the high street, here. Still have Spanish and a few German things lefts over. Clearly those olive oil flat pastries did not go down well in Sydenham. They had loads left. I am sorry that they didn't have any flammekuechen which was not part of any 'week'. They had lots of deep fried frozen halloween c**p as did Sainsburys.

I am a bit worried I am becoming a tad obsessive about Lidl...
