Note to Stokey, regarding the Finocciona comments:

Just spotted Finocciona in Tesco (the big one, doubt it would be in the Express Tescos) although at £3.50 for 100g I will pass! Nearly twice the Lidl price.

Incidentally it was on sale in Lidl for ages, I ended buying 4 packs, although it's definitely gone now.

Just had some Lidl cherries*, which were on special offer.

Virtually tasteless. Like supermarket tomatoes, which also taste of nothing, does nobody in quality control test these things before they order truckloads of them to fill the shelves?

*P.S. Bought as I read they help alleviate gout which is giving me gyp at the moment. Cherry JUICE was recommended, but couldn't find any, only "juice drink", which is basically water with a teaspoonful of cherry juice and 93 spoonsful of sugar.

Where did the cherries come from? Must surely be southern hemisphere at this time of year?

Sorry about the gout, nasty,

Doesn't it have to be "tart" cherry juice to benefit gout? Might be worth trying a Turkish or Polish shop, I see Aytac the major Turkish grocery brand have pure cherry juice /nectar. Drank a lot of sour cherry in Turkey - the Turkish is visne, which sometimes make it easier to find (wisny I think in Polish, same)

I was a bit sceptical of "Montmorency Cherries" so I did kust a little digging, both the BMJ and the British Rheumatology society think any tart cherries will do (and the US NIH thinks cherries may really help), I suppose the idea that the cherries have to be the Montmorency variety may be more to do with marketing than medicine - a lot more expensive than Aytac!

Ha! Sorted!

I found a cherry juice product on Holland and Barratt's website, on special offer £10.66 from £15.99 (There's an H&B in my local Tesco).

When looking for the £10 stuff (which had added ingredients like "glucosamine" I didn't particularly need), I found a new product on the shelves, actual pure tart cherry juice, introductory price £5.76 for a litre, down from £7.69!

Central and Eastern European week, I see. I have not been to Lidl for a few weeks. I am surprised I am not having withdrawal symptoms...

I was a bit disappointed with the specials yesterday though some looked interesting. They had pretzel rolls and Quark pudding though so I was a happy bunny.

It doesn't excite me, but then there are lots of Turkish supermarkets round here that sell a lot of eastern and central European food all the time.

They have cherry drink, I see. I was coincidentally wondering whether to take myself down the road to 'Istanbul' for some of that today. It will be more expensive than Lidl.

i think you would have to see what the concentration of the actual cherry juice is in each.
i was horrified when sunny delight came on the market, announcing that it was full of orange juice and vitamin c, when the total amount of 'orange juice from concentrate was 5%.

It did taste quite nice though (imo). Reminded me of Bird's Appeal. (A powder. Doubtless full of sugar and not much juice either. Had a slightly sherberty thing going on.)

My sour cherry juice (which is what I craved) from Istanbul cost £1.69. Minimum fruit: 20% The only fruit is cherry.

Lidl is actually cherry and apple (or apple and cherry) and costs £1.25. No ingredients info online. (I didn't make it to Lidl. Istanbul wore me out! :) )

edit but Asda sell the very same for £1.90.
Ingredients
Water, Juices from Concentrate from: Apple (14%) and Cherry (6%), Sugar, Blackcurrant and Chokeberry Concentrate, Acidity Regulators: Citric Acid and Malic Acid, Flavourings, Sweetener-Sucralose

So if that's what you want, Lidl is a steal.

I don't know what chokeberry is. Will have to look it up.

Went to Lidl this morning, they've apparently stopped doing canned chickpeas - the manager guy I spoke to was as bemused as I was!

They did have a nice looking artichoke pate (£1.99) for a small-ish jar, that I haven't noticed before, not even in Italian week.
Odd gaps, such as no dried figs.

They've still got their deluxe pomegranate candles, reduced now, so I got another one. Arghh, just checked, I thought I still had 2, but only had one. I should have bought two! Oh well, by the time I go there next they'll probably have cleared all their Christmas stock.

I was too poorly to go last week. I might hang on until the next food week, now. Unless T will take me in the car to the bigger (nicer) one... (But near impossible to park.)

there were chickpeas when i went last week. they are so popular i doubt they would discontinue the line - more than likely they just hadn't had a delivery. sometimes the butter beans aren't there for a while.
maybe just a seasonal factory lack.

I think even Lidl's organising ability is making JIT (just in time) deliveries tricky post Brexit and given transport problems, they occasionally run out of my staples unexpectedly, then I go into another branch or come back a couple of days later and everything is back to normal

I'm not sure the butter beans are quite as special as they were, though still the best around and absurdly cheap, might put some in my dinner.
