I hanker after rock melon, common in Australia. I've never seen them here - similar to Galia but much tastier.
This is interesting ... I still haven't seen them here though!
'Originally, cantaloupe referred only to the non-netted, orange-fleshed melons of Europe, but today may refer to any orange-fleshed melon of the C. melo species, including the netted muskmelon which is called cantaloupe in North America, rockmelon in Australia and New Zealand, and spanspek in Southern Africa'.

I had to think about “toad skin” - I’ve known it called piel de sapo in English! I guess that’s because that’s the label on the crate - in fact I didn’t know the translation until quite recently.
Ideally Charentais or cantaloup, but preferably on holiday, ripened on the plant and definitely still warm from the sun not chilled

I really like rock melon too, EM. Watermelon is popular here, too. Lovely colour and very refreshing but not very tasty, I find.Earthmaiden wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2024 9:55 pm I hanker after rock melon, common in Australia. I've never seen them here - similar to Galia but much tastier.
I'd never heard of Galia before!

We’re querying the price shown for the Procook cast iron casserole.Pepper Pig wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 11:24 am Best pans.

When I go online I find them at £89 for two and OH says they’re often less than that.

They all look good. Discovering IKEA pans was my gamechanger. Not for everything of course.

I’m a bit surprised how many go for cast iron, my cast iron days are behind me, too heavy.
Contrariwise I’m surprised how few go for stainless steel, just one for hex clad.
I’m with Tim Hayward on the bowl shaped all purpose chef’s pan, I’ve got a Greenpan one and I love it, it will be replaced if/when I get induction cooking. I’m also with him on Nisbets, the Brighton shop especially is like an Aladdin’s cave

Yup, me too, Sue. I guess they've all got dead strong arms from having been heaving around heavy pots, that is, before they reached their current status.Stokey Sue wrote: ↑Tue Aug 06, 2024 2:09 pm I’m a bit surprised how many go for cast iron, my cast iron days are behind me, too heavy.
Funnily enough, when I was first diagnosed with RA when I was 26, the consultant suggested I think about an alternative career to being a professional violinist, and as I was a dead keen cook, if I had to change careers, that appealed to me ...
Until, that is, I was warned about the heaving around of heavy pots, pans, dishes etc, which would definitely not have been very advisable.
Re: Foodies In The News
i have a mix of cast iron, greenpans and a couple of stainless steel.
i use them all. they have their place for different methods of cooking, if you ask me.

Re: Foodies In The News
her jam looks a little runny to me.
i follow ian in france's method, adding in redcurrants to get a good set - and often use a bag of frozen strawberries from lidl.
we never have over-ripe strawberries - they don't hang around that long!
