I was just thinking that pumpkin was a bit out of season but it's an Australian article. Looks a far cry from the days when pumpkin was a staple with a roast over there but not much else.

Russian salad always makes me think of those Heinz tins. Quite funny it was served in those circumstances though!

We get something very similar in plastic tubs from Tesco. It’s in the Polish section and called Warsaw salad.

Russians (and Ukrainians) call it salad Olivieh - nothing to do with olives, named for the Belgian chef who is supposed to have introduced it to the area covered by the former USSR

I feel no need to make custard tarts - simply because I like M&S ones and doubt I could do as well

Here are 3 recipes from Deborah Robertson's new book, Notes from a Small Kitchen Island which is published today

I provide the link because

1 they are good recipes

2 Deborah was a Stokey local until last year, a nodding acquaintance

3 the first recipe is Fox Reformed Smoked Haddock in Tarragon Cream, it was a signature dish of the Fox Reformed wine bar, run by my friends Robbie and Carol, and although I was one of the regular backgammon players she mentions in her introduction, I never tasted it, being allergic to tarragon. Might work with dill I think

That first one isn't a million miles away from Omelette Arnold Bennett which they were making on the programme about The Savoy the other night.

The heading seems to have got it the wrong way round!

I am surprised at the number of people who still add salt at the table without tasting the food first. Whatever happened to putting a little pile on the side of the plat? I have to admit to adding salt very ocassionally once I have tasted the food. So many people don't add it to dishes nowadays and sometimes it really enhances it (though far better added at the time of cooking). Then there's bags of chips ...... a rare treat anyway!

i always taste first - there have been times when even i have thought a dish was too salty! - but i nearly always put a little pile on my plate. i'm one of those with low blood pressure.
