i agree that the il cassolare is probably the nicest you can buy in a supermarket - on the rare occasion it's on a special offer i stock up. even better than that is the one we were given for christmas by our upcountry young - 3l of 'ogglio' extra virgin - beautiful.

I'm not taken with the Lidl Pugliese - there's nothing wrong with it, but it is very strongly flavoured and to my taste overwhelms everything, slightly bitter, and it seems to deteriorate quite fast tp, despite being kept in the dark at all times

Oh that’s a shame SSue. OH treated me to a bottle of that when he did some pre Christmas shopping in Lidl. It’s currently sitting in the overflow cupboard until I finish the Tesco Sicilian one, which I’m quite enjoying.

You might like it, as Rachel R does.

I’m sure you’ve all heard about Giles Coren, but in case you haven’t…

How sad. Let's hope his treatment is a success.

I don’t think it needs treatment yet.

It’s on my list to try after we move back bearer to York.

I know the old pub it’s in, a real sticky carpet boozer. It will be good to see it in a new iteration.

After Christmas, I make what I like to call ‘the mother of all cassoulets’ (Mama Cass-oulet?) using leftover goose plus carcass stock, ham bits and various garlicky sausages with home-grown beans. Not very authentic, very nice.

I ceased eating there some time ago, the food was ok but the service appalling. The last time they kept us waiting an hour to take our order, evidently a crash in the A1 had stopped the chefs getting through from Bradford. Why the didn’t tell us that when we arrived I don’t know - we would have gone and had a drink somewhere in Thirsk and come back later. It was the straw that broke the camels back, and we vowed not to go back.

The reported doesn’t surprise me, ostrich is expensive, lamb less so.
