... and those languishing at the back of the drawer!
Sainsbury cafe closure .. https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... ters-cafes
Just as Waitrose reintroduce free coffee (but not in their cafes). The one I go to still has a Sainsburys owned cafe. A lot of older people use it whilst waiting for buses or taxis or to rest after shopping. There are Costas not far away (by car) so I wonder if they would want to take this on.
Our pizza area was replaced by a sushi franchise.

Re: Foodies In The News
i have had a masala dabba for years.
i haven't used it for a while but it is quite useful if you are doing an indian meal or one that needs lots of different spices - to use as small pots that you measure the spices into before you make the dish.
many indian recipes call for a spoon of this or that to be added at the same time or every few seconds etc so it's useful to have them there at the right time in the right order and amount.
i can see how jay's use of it would be much more sensible as when i had it filled with indian meal spices they would stale quicker than i used them.
my herbs and spices are in plastic stacking baskets (that arrive in a supermarket with spring onions in) - 7 of them - alphabetically grouped except that the basket which is labeled most used which sits on top of the basket labeled least used. they also have the essences, colour and glitter.
i think my most used would be:
garlic powder
oregano,
smoked paprika,
chilli flakes,
mushroom stock cubes,
then possibly cumin seeds and kelp powder.
my dabba doesn't have a window but it did come with little spoons.

I always like the look of a masala dabba but wouldn’t want one.
First I’ve nowhere’s to put it. Second they all have glass lids, and spices in glass in my very bright kitchen must go into a dark cupboard (or a tin). I once left a new jar of paprika out in the light and it went from brick red to sepia within 10 days, the flavour went too.
I am surprised Jay doesn’t use up the asafoetida, sumac or tamarind (which should be in the fridge), I have them all. Admittedly the asafoetida has been around a long time, but it keeps. Ottolenghi can keep the fennel pollen though.

Re: Foodies In The News
I keep packeted spices in plastic boxes in a drawer. Any spices bought in pots or jars are also kept there. If a number are needed for a recipe, they get spooned out before cooking, into little dishes or onto a saucer. Often though, Indian dishes involve several whole spices at the start, and several ground ones at the end, so the whole ones go on a saucer and the powders into a ramekin. I use neither garlic powder nor chilli flakes but the drawer is very full…

That’s how I measure them out, using the little saucers made for dipping sauces in Chinese restaurants mostly for containers, if I’m grinding spices then I add all the powders, usually including salt, into the cup of the grinder while measuring.

This weekend’s Twitter “debate” is - What’s a condiment?

Re: Foodies In The News
oddly, perhaps because of fads for things like crispy chilli oil, kimchi, various dipping sauces, etc both the word and the thing seem to be flowering a little, but I think there might be a slight shift in emphasis, hence the debate.Norfolkman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 11:58 amI'll bet a lot of the younger generation have never even heard the word.Stokey Sue wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2025 9:51 am This weekend’s Twitter “debate” is - What’s a condiment?![]()
