The description of the cheese 'products' was really very off putting. But in principle I'd definitely try it (using proper cheese...)

The strongest cheese they had at the Tillamook factory tasted like English mild cheddar to us...

My Anglophile Deep South cousin buys 'English mature cheddar' from Aldi. No idea how authentic that is.

US mainstream cheese is grim stuff I found. I read there are some artisan producers but I haven't tried any.

Ooh, that does look good!
Stroud is quite quirky and has a wonderful farmer's market every Saturday until 2pm if anyone ever wants a meet there.

Wow, that's interesting. I stock up on Mutti when they are on offer at £1 a tin but M&S seem to be as good, I'll try them.

Yes, that is interesting, thanks. I never know what to buy when juggling brand/price.

I bought Cirio on offer recently, looks like that my have been smart, she hasn't tested as many brands as Xanthe Clay does for her Telegraph reviews I think? I don't see those as I don't have a Telegraph account. Will certainly try the M&S ones.
I have bought the Lidl copy of the Mutti Polpa, which is an example of one not reviewed, but they aren't as rich though good, I'm not as keen as Ms Roddy on chunky chopped toms, as I'm nearly always cooking to pulp
If I really want chunks I think it is worth getting the Mutti Pelati (peeled tomatoes) - exactly what it says, 7 or 8 lovely peeled tomatoes crammed into a can with nothing else, no additional juice

I feel a tomato tart shouting to be made...

As an aside I find M&S baked beans at 45p per tin just as good as Heinz, as is their own brand tomato ketchup, salad cream and brown sauce all at £1 per, admittedly smaller, bottle. I’ll also recommend their tinned green lentils.

Thanks, another Top Tip, I'll try those as well next time I go out to forage by M&S. I wonder whether they can be smuggled past the 'sophisticated eater', bet they can. Oh, a taste testing...this won't end well I fear.

I love those sort of cakes heavy with black treacle - spread with butter :D. I've never used date syrup though. Interested to see what it would bring to the cake.

I've had a jar of date syrup in the back of the fridge, for, probably, 18 or maybe even 20 yrs. It moved with us when we came here in 2012 and I'd had it for ages before that. So I'm really glad I have finally found a use for it! (I tasted it, and it is rather nice!)
I'm planning to bake the loaf when my book group comes (when I will also use the stilton discussed on another thread).
It's pretty large, and OH is supposed not to eat dates. And I really don't think he should eat prunes in any shape or form :D Will report back!

My date syrup hung around so long I used it up on porridge

I’ve got some date molasses that will probably have to be turned into homemade rashi & dibis if it doesn’t get used soon. There’s also a bottle of pomegranate molasses, but no contingency plan.

Pomegranate molasses I do use - had a meal in a decent Lebanese restaurant a few months back and discovered they use it far more liberally than I do, so will now get through it more quickly

I have tried date syrup (and it would be very nice on porridge and for other indulgent uses) but wonder if it makes much difference to the cake mentioned.
