You only needed to ask a search engine for pictures of roasted guinea pig in Peru!

I'm always worried when people play about with children or animals on a stove :D.

I wonder how popular it really is? Spent a week in Lima and saw one specialist restaurant - a long-standing one, but these days I think mainly catering to tourists and young Peruvians who want to try it (rather as I once tried jellied eels).

Not obviously ethically inferior to the consumption of hutch rabbits, and the TikTok is clearly a joke. .

There are an awful lot of pictures online and I once saw one pictured in a polystyrene fast food container with chips.I can't believe it is just a gimmick these days. I expect if you eat meat it is as nice as many other kinds.

Sakkarin - stop it! I don't like to watch any medical procedures. Even that made me feel a bit peculiar!

A friend married an Ecuadorean chap and lived out there for a while. I’m pretty sure she had Guinea pig at family parties.

I’m not saying people don’t eat guinea pigs or that it’s simply a gimmick - just that it’s not really a mainstream part of the diet in the 21st century, though clearly it is still eaten and still has people who really like it. Much like jellied eels or winkles or saveloys in England. Might be more common in rural areas where they can be reared in back yards, like rabbits or chickens.

And if they do eat them, is that any more of a problem than other meat?

When we were there - about 1980!! - we saw roasted guinea pigs being sold on street stalls. As a vegetarian we just ignored them and I agree with Sue - just another type of meat, so I wouldn't eat it!
After all, lambs are cute and cuddly frolicking in the fields and lots of people eat them!!

We ate guinea pig by mistake when in Peru.

There is a highly rated restaurant in the square at Cuzco which has photos of all its dishes.

We thought we were getting chicken on skewers with an accompaniment of exotic side salad. Wrong!!

What was it like BB?

The guinea pig restaurant near me in Lima was rather obvious as the logo was a dancing cavy in a hat, a bit like a furry version of the Planter’s peanut. But my colleague, the lovely JP, said that was where you had to go, he took me to a buffet in a converted garage, very much for the local cognoscenti, wish I could get their yellow potato cakes filled with crab - but they didn’t offer guineas

It was a long time ago but I remember that we enjoyed our meal there.

It probably did taste like chicken (bland-ish white meat) and that's why we weren't alerted to it being anything different.

No that's her husband, Joe Swash :lol: - and he's not, but he has written a few recipes, strictly of the the feeding kids without faffing around too much variety (quite good to be fair, saw him on Steph's Packed Lunch, they do have 5 or 6 sprogs between them)
