Home freezing

Post by Gruney »

I bought a pack of steak mince from Morrisons the other day,but alas I now find that I won't be able to use it before the "Use by Date". The label has the instruction "keep refrigerated", but not the message "suitable for home freezing". What do you think, please?

I would freeze it but use as soon as you are able; presumably it has been in the fridge since you bought it ?

Bung it in the freezer - it'll be totally fine!
It would also keep very well in the fridge for quite a few days - mince does, so no worries.

Thanks both. The message is usually clearly stated on Morrisons products - it didn't say "Not suitable for home freezing",though - hence my uncertainty. Thanks again.

I invariably freeze supermarket mince. I only read the label regarding freezing on processed goods.

I had planned to make a chilli con carne, a couple of days ago, but something cropped up - see “What are you eating today “. There’s a video which is always encouraging. It’s really easy, but involves a very long simmer. I can recommend it unreservedly, if you’re in the mood. Do let me know if you do it

That's very similar to how I make my chilli Gruney except I use soaked dried beans & am quite heavy handed with the chillies :D I also finnish it off in a slow oven after boiling the beans in the sauce on the hob for a while - it does take a long time & I let it stand & reheat over at least 2 days adding more ingredients as my mood takes - it's worth it! and the vat I make is great to halve for the freezer.

I'm going with a cottage pie for the mince in the fridge......or maybe a spag bol......I'm a fickle cook......
