When T first started working for energy companies it was standard to go to the pub at Friday lunch time and either not come back or stagger back to log in early evening, then go home. It was often done on company cards too. This sort of thing began to end in the second half of the Noughties though.
it didn't end in the noughts for everyone.
when our daughter was a solicitor she was expected to go to a drink do on thursday evenings, from work, to 'network' (on an empty stomach). unfortunately she was then expected to get the train home, late at night and after a few glasses of wine.
our son in law often used to have to go and get her when she missed the train. she then had to get the train to work before eight the next morning.
no way would her work, now, expect her to drink.
when our son was working in london, before first lockdown, there was expectation to go for office drinks, again on thursday after work. he isn't much of a drinker so he would be in to work on the friday whereas many wouldn't be...
they both have fridges that have alcohol free beer rather than 'whole' beer in nowadays.
