Re: Low/No alcohol at Christmas
Today's a/f beer report.
It was the turn of Lucky Saint Unfiltered Lager, as I poured it there was a promising lemony aroma, alas it didn't live up to my expectations, I found it to be fairly tasteless. Oh well never mind there will be another beer to try on Wednesday when the shopping arrives. This is a tough job but someone has to do it !
Aero, enjoy your beer festival!

Bitburger 0.0% tonight. Not bad at all, it has some taste to it. It will probably be a regular in the beer fridge. There is a Clausthaler Grapefruit left to try, possibly tomorrow, then no new ones until next weeks shopping delivery.

it didn't end in the noughts for everyone.herbidacious wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2024 9:16 am When T first started working for energy companies it was standard to go to the pub at Friday lunch time and either not come back or stagger back to log in early evening, then go home. It was often done on company cards too. This sort of thing began to end in the second half of the Noughties though.
when our daughter was a solicitor she was expected to go to a drink do on thursday evenings, from work, to 'network' (on an empty stomach). unfortunately she was then expected to get the train home, late at night and after a few glasses of wine.
our son in law often used to have to go and get her when she missed the train. she then had to get the train to work before eight the next morning.
no way would her work, now, expect her to drink.
when our son was working in london, before first lockdown, there was expectation to go for office drinks, again on thursday after work. he isn't much of a drinker so he would be in to work on the friday whereas many wouldn't be...
they both have fridges that have alcohol free beer rather than 'whole' beer in nowadays.

Hubby popped up to Waitrose for something and picked me up a pack of Staropramen Premium Lager 0%. So, unexpectedly, I have another beer in the collection. This one is pretty nice, if it's to your taste of course.

There’s a feature in today’s Telegraph, behind a paywall of course, saying how successful the 0% Guinness has been. Along these lines. https://www.ibec.ie/drinksireland/news- ... guiness-00

Thanks for that PP . The quality of the beers I'm trying now are a world away from the early days. The 0.0 Guinness is on my radar for when the weather cools down.

Well, here I am, back again! Shopping delivered today, had 2 new a/f beers to try. Tonight's newbie was an Estrella Galicia, not as much taste as some others but it was very pleasant indeed. It will be a regular in the beer fridge. Another new one tomorrow I think.

Tonight's new beer was Brooklyn Brewery Special Effects. Quite nice but not a Lager IMHO, a bit on the bold side. This will not have a place in the beer fridge as I would far rather have Erdinger Weissbier if choosing to drink something a bit bolder, however I would happily drink it if out and about and other choices were thin on the ground.

Goodness! I didn't read it all as it's very long, but enough to be quite taken aback! https://www.theguardian.com/wellness/ar ... ncy-kratom

I do wonder about the effects of a lot of drinks on sale these days.

Crikey, I'd heard, rather vaguely, of kava but not kratom, Web MD does not think they are a good idea and that's a site that often gives good summary.
Worth remembering that botanicals, especially bitter ones, can have a pharmacological effect in sufficient quantities - after all, both morphine and strychnine come from botanical sources, herbal "remedies" and drinks aren't necessarily innocuous

We had a summery salad lunch at Snape malting yesterday. I had an alcohol free Big Drop IPA with mine … light, citrussy and very drinkable with that sort of lunch. Brewed in Ipswich and available in Waitrose apparently.
OH had the lager from the same label. He enjoyed it … he said it was a bit more hoppy and less citrusy than the IPA. He didn’t let me have enough to test it properly

Can highly recommend Becks AF - sold as Becks Blue AF - every bit as good as the original. Served good and chilled from the fridge of course

I'm umming and aaahing about the Big Drop Suffs, I'm really not keen on tinned beer....now if I come across some in bottles it will be sampled!
Got some Leffe in the shopping this week. Unlike any of the others I have tried. It's quite a different taste, which I liked, and when I read the label I noticed it has 'subtle notes of vanilla & cloves' now I know I can taste them ! I did rather like it but as a bit of a change rather than an every day beer.

What is it about beer in cans you don’t like? Is there an aftertaste or is it just a preference?
Cans are better for paler beers as the sunlight doesn’t get through and spoil the hops
