English National Opera ...
English National Opera ...
I wouldn't normally post something like this - mods, please remove if it is unsuitable and I will totally understand - but ENO is having a gun held to its head with no prior consultation. That it was given one day's notice of a proposed 100% funding cut is beyond belief.

This is a petition launched by the singer, Sir Bryn Terfel.

Signed it yesterday. Absolutely appalling but typical of the approach to the arts by this government over the last 13 years.
Re: English National Opera ...
I mentioned it to OH, but she already had it in hand.

Re: English National Opera ...
The whole idea is outrageous. Why does the Gvt hate the arts so much?
I've signed.
I've signed.
Re: English National Opera ...
You might well ask, mm
While we are cutting, cutting, cutting arts and culture subsidy, guess which way it's going in France ... yup, it's being increased ...

Re: English National Opera ...
In Germany, most small towns seem to have opera houses - and the ticket prices are affordable.
I am sure it's not a matter of hating the arts, but rather believing that cultural things have to fund themselves, which basically means that only things with mass appeal will survive... and unfortunately that means anything regarded as at all 'high brow' will not... at this rate.
It's a miracle most museums are still free. I suppose they are desperately subsidizing themselves by charging outrageous prices for temporary exhibitions. Not sure how museums are funded though. I assume it's on a more local level.

Re: English National Opera ...
If only the incredibly rich folk still believed in earning themselves a place in heaven by funding museums, galleries, theatres and other such things, rather than keeping luxury yacht manufacturers in business.
Re: English National Opera ...
True, but look at the blowback re all the Sackler opiod money?
Re: English National Opera ...
True ... but would it have been better or worse to have spent it on a yacht ... I sometimes lean towards pragmatism ...
