River cafe
There was a review of the restaurant in this past Fridays London evening standard magazine on the river cafe.
Ambience was given 4 stars out of five as was food, 4 stars out of five.
What got me was the cost of lunch for two
£166.50 for two. Ouch!!
According to XE.com, that figures into $217US
I could buy groceries for close to a month for that.
Is the food gold plated??
Sorry, the king of stylee may have been there along with hf-w but it is not on my bucket list

Re: River cafe
That does seem very expensive
The wine seems oddly reasonable but £22 for mozzarella di buffala? . Presumably all they do is plate it with a few bits of salad? Decent mozzarella is about £20 per kg, so even if the best is twice or thrice that...

Re: River cafe
Mark,
Interesting Post ..
A Caprese Salad consisting of Mozzarella di Bufala ( not cow milk), tomatoes, fresh Genovese Basil and Evoo + Modena Balsamic Vinegar in Barcelona or Madrid, costs 8.00 - 9.00 Euros.
(22.50 Euros = almost 43 Pounds according to today´s Exchange Rate ) ..
This is quite expensive .. Double Italy and double Spain ..

Re: River cafe
I would expect to pay about £8 or £9 for an insalata caprese in a good Italian restaurant in London, less in a chain or neighbourhood restaurant (though that would not necessarily be the very best mozzarella)
I’ll have a look and see how much really good mozzarella costs in La Fromagerie if I get a chance

Re: River cafe
I've just looked up the website Mark. It is rather expensive, but a lovely selection of meals. There are a few recipes there.

Re: River cafe
We have been there years ago, and it is a super restaurant.
Memorably so, unlike something like Arbutus for example, that was forgetable.
There seems to be an extra starter, is it me?
Lamb and seabass seems very highly priced. But wouldn't bother me when sitting there.
I'd go back. Easily. It's lovely.
But like some restaurants in London, you would have to go for an impressive occasion probably.
It is out of the ordinary tho.
(Nothing to do with HFW).

Re: River cafe
In Naples, a kilo of Mozzarella di Bufala can cost between 30.00 Euros per kilo and 40.00 Euros per kilo depending on the quality and the producer ..

Re: River cafe
I also went to River Cafe years ago and it was all lovely. Although it was very posh even then, it was reasonably affordable. Mind you, the paranoia about elitist Michelin stars and celebritisation hadn't really taken off then so super-inflated prices hadn't either.
mark111757, prices like £80+ per lunch are typically paid for by those with a business expenses account. Definitely more that most of the country could pay for a daily lunch lol.

Re: River cafe
Mark,
Just read the two articles.
Sheer reading pleasure ..
I know a Gentleman who makes Mozzarella di Bufala very close to Napoli .. He is a boutique producer catering to the restaurant & hotels in Napoli ..
His cheese is simply heaven on earth ..
Thank you and have a lovely day / evening ..

Re: River cafe
When I worked in London, I often walked to this famous delicatessen for Italian produce.
It was cheap then, a large panetonne would be £4, whereas Harrods or other nice shops would be £10. I'd get pastas, mozzarellas. It's where the italians I worked with at the bank would shop.

I wonder what fine mozzarella they have now.
If I get to London in November, I'm going to have a memory lane walk back there.

And if you thought River Café was expensive, try Nusr_et in Miami, New York or Dubai.

Re: River cafe
The best rib steak I’ve ever had was at Aubrac on the Champs Elyse in Paris
A single rib, char grilled to perfection, some fries and a green salad, bottle of wine Preceded by a dozen oysters and two glasses of white wine each. This was a shared meal for two and the total cost was less than $120, a while ago but no more than $160 now I don’t think
