Re: Foodies In The News
A lot of pre-discusson for such a seemingly simple dish! Probably hard to get exactly right but easy to make something tasty which resembles it anyway.

Re: Foodies In The News
Wow, that looks FAB!!
I will definitely try it for some friends coming to lunch next week. I have had a jar of Lidl Sour Cherries in Syrup for yonks and I think this would finally be the perfect use for them (29/08/2017 )
But, the drained weight is only 235g - 460g including syrup.
I wonder if I should reduce the recipe slightly or get an additional can/jar of fruit .... hmm ....
Actually, having just read it to the end I think it'll be fine as the actual cake only needs a dozen cherries - one for each slice
ETA, do you think an 8in/20cm or 9in/23cm springform cake tin would be better?

Re: Foodies In The News
It looks great - but how sloppy not to have stated the required tin size. The volume of ingredients doesn't seem overly high but the cake in the photo looks quite big. Maybe try an 8" and rethink when you see the amount of mixture in the bowl!
Please may we have some too?

Absolutely, EM - will send some over by drone
(If they can deliver drugs to prisons like that, I think we can manage some cake )

Re: Foodies In The News
Rachel's a bit like that, very precise over some things and not others
I made the cauliflower and potato sformato yesterday, very nice but although she gives immensely detailed instructions for making béchamel (which I ignored, as I've been making it for over half a century, I did use the measured ingredients)she says "Breadcrumbs" and doesn't specify fresh or dried, should definitely be fresh, and probably needs a bit more cheese mixed in to make a good texture
I made a few changes:-
Romanesco, as she suggests
Half quantity
I steamed the Romanesco over the potatoes, seemed no point in using 2 pans and prevents waterlogging
The relatively large amount of sauce and slow baking gives a really nice texture and blend of flavours, it's not really like cauli cheese as that small amount of parmesan makes it savoury rather than definitely cheesy, I had some with sausages
Here's the link again

Really? I made it as well and was seriously underwhelmed. What was the point of all that effort?

Not sure if this is the right thread to post this ... but the M & S Valentine special actually looks quite nice https://www.marksandspencer.com/c/food- ... 09.9429027
No doubt Waitrose etc will follow suit, so I'll be interested to see what they come up with!
Meant to say, I like the look of the lemon meringue pie. I might well try it, as I really like it a lot, although I'll probably use bought pastry

Ooh, I may go over to Mark's just to get the camembert.
I'll happily eat it all to myself on Saturday evening whilst watching The Masked Singer final.

Yes, it looks splittable for us singeltons. (New role in life).
I haven't made a lemon meringue pie in years but it was one of Chris's favourite desserts. I used to make it from scratch though, unlike my mother. Can you still get Royal Lemon Meringue pie mix?

Apparently you can still get Royal, I used to sell it and all the other little packs of mixes made by Greens when I worked in Woolworths in 1970

Re: Foodies In The News
I didn't realise that pulses picked and eaten fresh/green weren't pulses.I'm bit wary about drying them myself in case they aren't properly dried.
Re: Foodies In The News
pulses are the easiest thing in the world to dry. you just leave them on the plant until the pods go brown and papery (or cardboardy). pick them, leave them in a dry place before taking out the dry beans and storing them in a jar. i do it every year for either eating or replanting.
i grow the greek gigantes beans each year, originally from a packet bought in a supermarket in greece a few years back.
ps - my partner says tomorrow must be 'world fart day'...

Yep, I know drying beans should be easy.
