Soul Food. A lovely read and some great recipes. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2022/j ... sh-streets

This by Jack Monroe - I am sure we all agree with her when she talks about the "basics" lines from supermarkets disappearing https://www.theguardian.com/society/202 ... rice-index
Interesting that Iceland is keeping its £1 range.

That started as a Twitter thread, which a few people like Hugh Grant picked up and retweeted, very interesting

I think some of them are pretty obscure, and quite a lot are just mixtures of more familiar spices in different proportions
I'm always slightly confused about where za'atar and dukkah fade into each other , but Claudia Roden's recipe for dukkah apparently includes nuts (which I wouldn't put in za'atar) in place of the dried herbs that go into za'atar and there is usn't usually coriander in za'atar

Re: Foodies In The News
I don't think I've ever had dukkah, Sue. We have za'atar and have found a huge difference between different brands. Funnily enough the best was one DS1 brought back from Israel a few years ago. We have a great Palestinian one at the moment that we just bought. The brand is Telfeet's Land https://www.telfeetsland.co.uk/product/thyme
I like that it's called "grinded" thyme

I’ll look for this elsewhere in case it’s behind a paywall. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... istration/
Corbin and King now in administration. That’s Brasserie Z etc.

Also news on Andi Oliver.

That’s a bit doom and gloom - yes the Telegraph is paywalled
Not just Zedel but all the others like my nearest, Bellanger - you did well to spend your Wolseley vouchers
Naughty Andi, but at least she has fessed up

Grim times. Looks as though the Wolsely etc will survive.
I have never been fond of the concept of service charges and this doesn't help even if they have been something of a long term lifesaver.
The first time I bought Dukkah, the one I'd chosen didn't contain cumin (which I don't like much) and I loved it. Of course, that turned out to be pretty unauthentic. That spice range looks good, BM.

Re: Foodies In The News
I tend not to buy the simpler mixes like dukkah and za’atar, except perhaps at a local market if I see a maker, as they are very simple and I usually have all the ingredients anyway
I buy things like ras el hanout which can have upwards of 20 ingredients, looking for a new favourite since Nomads stopped making theirs, the Waitrose one is OK, Seasoned Pioneers has far too much chilli …
One thing to look for in the ingredients and avoid is a tendency to add vegetable bouillon powder, it’s cheap and savoury but very, very, wrong - mainly salt and often msg, I’ve seen it in several blends
The first place I noticed it was in the very authentic looking Al’Fez brand, though the expanded ingredients list shows yeast extract rather than msg

Edited to add I’ve had a look, and as usual Steenbergs looks the best, I’ll try that next

Hmmm! Maybe some quick action is needed. We got a substantial Zedel voucher for Christmas.

I agree. I'll just have to wait for some cooler weather when I feel like putting the oven on!!
