Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
Ended up with a few changes this week due to an accidental mash surplus situation!
Meal Plan 19/11-26/11
• Fri–freezer raid
• Sat – venison & haggis or pork & haggis burger, red cabbage slaw, corn
(this will depend if the elderly pack of venison mince in the freezer is still fit for consumption)
• Sun- pork chop, baby potatoes, red cabbage, green beans
• Mon- venison ragu with pasta
• Tues – dal, pitta, egg, spinach
• Wed – chicken and veg fried rice
• Thu – possibly out
• Soup of the week – use up of various frozen portions

I have never roasted cavolo nero (I dont think). I am absolutely going to rectify this, especially if it gives it a crispy seaweed texture!

I thought I'd posted last week's menu but must've forgotten to hit submit
Anyway, I've been to the farm shop and butcher and this is the plan for main meals for the next seven days
Friday ... breaded scampi, oven chips and peas (I wanted to get plaice or cod but they were waiting for a delivery). I'll make some tartare sauce to go with it.
Saturday ... pizza (margherita locally made ... thin sourdough base) and salad
Sunday ... pot roasted pheasant with roasted squash, roast potatoes and Cavalo Nero from the garden
Monday ... Pasta puttanesca
Tuesday ... sausage bake with onions, tomatoes, potatoes and sweetcorn
Wednesday ... cauliflower cheese with baked potatoes
Thursday ... Spaghetti bolognese
Soup of the week will be roasted butternut squash and carrot with sage.

Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
I semi planned, I made a pizza which I planned to make as a copy of one done at a local pub with fennel salami and sliced fresh fennel on it
Couldn't get the salami, and when I tasted the bit of bulb fennel I had, I didn't like it, I've tried microwaving a bit, as I was sure I'd enjoyed some recently and it's ok but I don't want to put it in anything I can't jettison
So current plan is to make a gratin with the fennel and serve it as a side to some fish, the fish is haddock need to decide how ot cook it

No proper plans for me but I arrived at Sainsburys just at the right time to get rtc maple smoked salmon pieces, a nice piece of haddock and some Plant Pioneers Chorizo Shroomdogs which along with some nice Stilton, lovely leeks and other staples will make good meals.
I bought the Plant Pioneers out of interest. I've had a couple of vegan ready made things before and not been keen. Tonight I cooked them and added them to an assortment of veggies and beans in a tomato sauce, expecting them to add a real smokey flavour. They didn't. I won't rush to have them again. There are some left for tomorrow.

Fish sounds lovely EM, what a shame the Plant Pioneer's Chorizo didn't deliver taste wise.
Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
I quite like the chorizo shroomdogs. They make good vegan sausage rolls and I enjoy them in a tomato sauce with chickpeas. I’ve also used them in a tofu scramble and in a one-pot rice dish.

I can imagine they might work in sausage rolls.

I had some Linda McCartney chorizo style vegan bangers, the overwhelming flavour was cumin which should not be there

Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
Oh dear . I would have liked a more texture on the ones I had, they were very soft both inside and out. I think I'd rather create my own vegan meals. I haven't opened the tin of banana blossom yet.
Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
Suffs, do you bother with a recipe for your roasted squash and carrot soup? Or just throw it together?
Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
KC2 I think once upon a time I based it on an amalgam of Nigel Slater's Spiced Pumpkin soup and something out of a River Cottage ... nowadays I just do it , depending on what I've got ... what sort of stock I have etc ... taste it often ... add a little soupcon of something (see what I did there? ) and it's a bit different every time ... but OH always loves it.
Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
Ha, that sounds very like my usual soup concoctions!
One exception is a carrot and cumin soup I'm planning to make for guests next week, so we tried it yesterday and actually followed the recipe! It was very successful, and the good thing about recipes is that there's an element of consistency and reliability which matters if you're feeding guests

Cumin almost always makes an appearance in my squash and/or carrot soups .... it works with both individually and together

Apologies if this has been said before and I am sure it has. But Vietnamese and Cambodian salads use banana blossom in the most delicious manner

Talking of fish fingers and such like, LTC, we had Waitrose breaded cod last night, part of their 3 for £10 deal. Really juicy and delicious crumb.

Much as I adore crumb, I leave most of it since trying to cut carbs. I have been quite shocked to see the crumb /fish ratio, there's a lot of crumb even on the expensive ones (same with the melting middle fish cakes I had last night).

Re: Meal planning - love or loathe?
Mine is the second of a two pack from Tesco KC2 they make such a handy quick meal.
Yes EM, breading or just lightly flouring at home definitely improves the fish to crumb ratio. I sometimes bake fish with only a light crumb on top which works well and cuts the carbs. The lightly dusted supermarket ones could be worth a try if you haven't already.
