Re: Foodies In The News
Interesting articles on shopping habits & rather blatant plagiarism!
I clocked the sausage crumble recipe earlier. Not sure I'd want all that apple but rather like the general idea even if not entirely new. They missed my favourites, plum (with almond extract and ground almonds) or apricot.

It is. Here's the menu, missing from the original feature.

It's interesting though, the comment I found the most pertinent was that JR has been to and positively reviewed plenty of restaurants that many people would regard as ridiculously expensive. For them it's no more silly or obscene to have a gilded steak than snail porridge or a night at Le Manoir.

I disagree BM, I think a gilded steak is a lot more silly than snail porridge
Snail porridge brings together two actual foods (snails and groats) that are intended to complement each other enjoyably in texture and flavour when carefully cooked and seasoned
Putting gold leaf on a steak adds nothing but cost and extravagant wastefulness; it’s defiant conspicuous consumption and to be honest even if Jay had made great black comedy from it, it would have been a bit “off” to publish on Earthshot day

I can't remember which sketch it was on Late Night Mash, but there was a fleeting reference to Salt Bae that I would have missed completely if it hadn't been for our conversations on here

Re: Foodies In The News
Excellent piece. I particularly warmed to the reference to crumbling empires.
I've always struggled to justify hugely expensive meals reminiscent of Trimalchio's dinner but the Hestons of this world do at least put in a lot of time and skill researching and developing a delicious and interesting theatrical experience. Plastering everything in gold leaf is just using unsustainable resources in a particularly tasteless way to please the nouveau riche and is a sad reflection of our current society.
Well done, Jay. I hope the kebab shop thrives.

Re: Foodies In The News
There's a long history of putting gold leaf on foods all over the world. In every case it's conspicuous consumption, it doesn't add anything to the flavour or nutrition, just bling. Always has been.
However, when I suggested that many people would regard it as no sillier than fayn dayning, I wasn't implying that any of them were contributors to this board. I'm sure several people here have eaten at the Fat Duck or stayed at Le Manoir, or any similar establishment. Others would jump at the chance if offered. Many other people however, would regard such places in a similar light to our feelings about gilded steaks.
