WHOOPS!!! Odd Food/Drink Combos
I was busy pottering about, making my b'fast this morning. Made myself a coffee to go with, as I usually do, but as I stirred it, I found something in the cup and fished it out.
It was a teabag! I must have put it in when I put one in Sis's cup (she doesn't like coffee). I took a sip of the resulting concoction, it er ....tasted ok, so I drank it
Have you peeps ever made an odd food/drink combo, either accidentally or otherwise?

My mother wasn't impressed with the sandwich I once made for her to take for her lunch at work. I put jam on one half and Marmite on the other but didn't cut it until afterwards so she got a bit of both on part of each sandwich. I quite like it actually!

Re: WHOOPS!!! Odd Food/Drink Combos
My late lovely Dad took a sandwich to work.
Every evening Mum would ask what he wanted in his sandwich.
Every evening he would reply "I don't mind"
So she made raspberry jelly sandwiches.
He was more direct in his answers after that.
That would probably have in the 70s.
I'm still amazed he didn't make his own.
I have never made J's sandwiches in 37 years.
Nor has he made mine.

I've mentioned this before I think, but yonks ago when I was a student and really on my uppers, I had nothing in the cupboard other than some rice, a tin of mackeral in brine and the last knockings of a jar of strawberry jam. Anyway, I cooked the rice and mixed through the mackeral, jam and a dollop of soy sauce and it was the most wonderful combination! I still make it for myself sometimes when no-one is looking.

My dad had a friend who put a pinch of mustard in anything he drank.
Another who put milk into oxo or bovril.
You've got me thinking, now!

My mum has sausage and marmalade toasted sandwiches and one of my friends has salad cream with cottage pie

A few years ago, I decided to put all my spice jars into alphabetical order. A few weeks later, i made an apple pie. It smelled quite strange as it was baking - I'd used cumin instead of cinnamon.

I'm partial to a banana and branston pickle sandwich or toastie.
When I was pregnant with DS2 lunch or breakfast pretty much every day was a slice of toast with butter & bitter orange marmalade and one topped with cottage cheese mixed with grated carrot eaten in alternate bites. Not one I've fancied since though.

I used to love marmite and blackcurrant jam when I was little - it's not so exciting nowadays, but then perhaps because the "jam" element was still relatively special then, and not something you could take for granted.
I remember one of these fun threads a while back, on Wildfoods, I think, when I confessed to liking the taste of spoons of coffeemate straight out of the jar ... As I recall, it wasn't just me ....

Too right it wasn't! I adored coffeemate straight from the jar.

HotbBovril made with milk was ‘a thing’ back in the day … you could buy a mug of it at Purdy’s Coffee Bar in Ipswich.

My famous poppy seed cake is still remembered by family as 'the best ever' ( I'm going back centuries).
Turned out it was black mustard seeds I'd used by mistake - bluddy good tho' _ I've meant to do that again but never got round to it.

I love a cheddar cheese and marmalade sandwich.
And I like a few sultanas on top of my peanut butter on crackers.

I recall being in a field centre in Colombia where the hot chocolate was made with chicken stock. We didn't get to eat the chicken - it was catfish for dinner every day - but there appeared to be plenty of stock.

Hmm, I must say I don't fancy that particular combo ... did you try it, BM, or did you give it a miss?

It tasted fine, different from the stuff we're used to of course. It probably wouldn't have worked with marshmallows & whipped cream! However, there were globules of fat from the stock floating in the chocolate. Some found that a bit off-putting.
