Re: Overrated food
Hmm. Not had peas pudding proper, but didn't think much to a tinned one, although I like mushy peas with fish and chips (spot of vinegar) or filled Yorks Puds which seems "right" although we never had them at home growing up that I recall except when we went to children's youth club evenings where they were served as supper if you brought a mug.
Crushing proper peas, that cheffy thing, beats me. I mean why would you? Did it come about so that diners could use their fork like a spoon and save embarrassment of escaping peas?

I wasn't brung up proper and remember being 'corrected' at school because I scooped peas up with a fork. Still do of course.
You can take the lad out of Edmonton...
I love eels in all their forms but eat them rarely nowadays.
Re: Overrated food
i read recently, in an old book on etiquette etc - that the correct way to eat peas is/was with a spoon.
i am now musing on the fact that i haven't seen a pea shooter for many a year...

Re: Overrated food
The discussion about eating peas reminds me of this nonsense rhyme from my childhood:
I eat my peas with honey;
I've done it all my life.
It makes the peas taste funny,
But it keeps them on the knife.

The inimitable Spike Milligan. It sprang to my mind too.
Of course, nowadays you can use a spork!

It doesn't make sense to me to try to balance peas on a upturned fork. I use common sense and use the fork the other way up.

Re: Overrated food
A food that may be controversial as I know some people here really like it, but - burrata
I've had it in England, and in Italy, it's ok I eat it, but I'd much rather have good mozzarella di bufala without the slimy centre thank you, to me it's a party trick that adds nothing to the pleasure of eating it

Have to disagree with you there, Sue. I think burrata is absolutely divine!

Oh dear. Poor woman. Am I allowed to say that I cannot bear mushy peas? Awful things. I don't like malt vinegar either. I have said it. I will be drummed out again.

I'll come with you Miss Mouse. I really dislike them too.
Sad about the market stall though. The same week as the best chip stall on Yarmouth market went too. What is the world coming to?

That chip stall is to be regretted. Market forces I suppose which is this brave new world.

Sadly, it's all a bit political Miss Mouse. The stall had been run by the same family for three generations.
Re: Overrated food
I really detest mushy peas and black peas with vinegar were offered to me once at a bonfire. Oh YUK, they were horrible! I have always lived in Lancashire, but never had them when I was growing up. I think that if people are given a food when they are young, they seem to like it.

I can't stand them. There are few foods I won't eat and they are one. Malt vinegar is another YUK.

I'll agree with that
My ex husband from long ago (University days!!) was from a Yorkshire mining village.
Everyone there seemed to love mushy peas and thought I was a bit of a Southern snob for not eating them (and for my accent, the newspapers I liked to read, etc.... )
