Re: TV and Online Cooking Shows
calling Greggs a bakery is a bit of a stretch of an imagination
I can remember tutting the first time reading that McDonalds described their outlets as restaurants and when hearing of the Hamburger University.
My initial reaction to the programme title 'Greggs: How do they really do it' was 'Why do they really do it?' but in both cases, the products are extremely popular, so who am I to criticise? I remain puzzled though, by people who wouldn't have touched them with a bargepole before, being enthusiastic about their vegan sausage rolls. Perhaps it's a gateway product. Someone once described sourdough as a means by which middle class people could eat white bread without feeling guilty. By the same token Aldi's wine section acts as a wide selection of gateway drugs to discounted supermarkets.

Re: TV and Online Cooking Shows
I don't feel that the sourdough/Aldi analogy is quite the same as Greggs which, to me, stands for the sort of food which is cheap and accessible but responsible for numerous health issues when eaten regularly. That is, of course, the addictive food (that irresistable magic mix of salt, fat, etc) that most people buy when they go there whether vegan or not. They actually do very good sandwiches and things too - worth knowing if you stop at a motorway services with one as they are cheaper and just as good as M&S etc which might also be there.
The change of inferred meaning of 'restaurant' came along the the American style chains, didn't it? Before that it was either a cafe which could be quite decent and serve nice hot meals or a restaurant which was much more special. Now we've everything inbetween too including 'Gastropubs'!

I remember getting really angry when I saw the slogan "McDonalds, official restaurant of the Olympic games"
Not a restaurant in my view, merely a pit stop

I saw this just after mentioning Gastropubs ....
it surprised me actually, such a short time ago that these and all the fancier chains were new to us. I remember how trendy it felt when a chap I was seeing in London took me to a Cafe Rouge one lunchtime (I think Cafe Rouge was better at that time than it became later).

I never disagree with Jay - except of course the Eagle wasn't the first gastropub, literally by a country mile, it was just the first that caught the eye of London critics
They were a mainstay of life in the shires by the end of the 60s, I remember my parents taking me to the Chairmakers at Anthill Common in Hampshire, and the White Horse in Sussex
The quality chains were relatively new - except that there were precursors like like Le Bistingo and the various Peter Illych places like Le Casino that got going in the 70s and which I know KC2 can also wax nostalgic over, we were there in our Laura Ashley glad rags

Hi mark111757, I'll be watching Daym Drops in spirit if not in the flesh as I'm in that camp of "everything's better fried". I rarely deep fry things though as it makes for too much cleaning up, which is probably a blessing in disguise
How's life treating you; is your physio going well? Is covid still present in your area? It seems to be variable here with some hot spots definitely still around but not too bad overall.

Watching tv early this morning (well what else do you do at 6am on a Saturday ) and saw an advert for Food Network, showing Ottolenghi in a (new?) series showing soon ... didn't get the details, and couldn't find any when googling either, as I was asked to subscribe to Discovery+ .... Nah!
Perhaps Mark can find it ?

Hi patsy
A mention in the radio times brings up ottolenghis Mediterranean feast series two. On food network. The series is set to start Mon June 28 from 3 to 4 pm.
Could thus be what you saw???
Lushy
How are you? Not much going on here at the facility. A sunny Saturday. We are more summery and post nasal drip has started. At least we can order out for takeaway. Sunday is dads day so I made an "anonymous" donation for donuts for the section I am on. Figured around three dozen.

Doing OK. Therapy is on hold so is walking with an aide. So sh rt staffed most of the time it is not tunny. At least we can order takeaway. was dealing with post nasal drip. Seems better now.other than that not much to say. Don't hear much about new cases around here. I guess that is a good thing. Don't know about hot spots around here. I hope you are OK and doing well.

Re: TV and Online Cooking Shows
Did anyone else see Stanley Tucci and his documentary about Italian cooking around Naples and the Amalfi coast? It was on CNN yesterday and well worth watching if it's repeated.
