Re: Bargain Basement
At my age I fall asleep in front of the TV quite often. Before the lockdowns, OH would be out at choir practices one or two nights a week.
I would watch program on Ch4 and fall asleep towards the end. OH would come home and I didn't wake up until she came into the room and the door would bang on the chair I was in and wake me up. It was repeated week after week. The embarrassing thing was that when she came in and I woke up, the TV had Naked Attraction on...

Re: Bargain Basement
ha ha ha.
I tried to buy the rather handy folding step you posted, but it's only available in Dundee now.

Re: Bargain Basement
The Wickes platform step-up is identical to one made by Youngmans, but Wickes do a slightly more expensive one (same price as the other was before the clearance discount). I've noticed that Wickes seem to be finishing their own brand stuff and selling similar/identical things under another manufacturer's name.

I also have one of these which I use to get up and down on the platform, just because it's easier than jumping, which I try to avoid at my advanced age...

I need to get a second one as OH is using it to get to the top cupboard in the kitchen, and also as a footrest when she is resting the guitar on her knee.

Re: Bargain Basement
Thank you, Will.
I do have a handy mini folding step for indoors, if I have to change a lightbulb for example.
The opposite to bargain.
I've just bought a bag of macadamia nuts from the Grapetree, without putting my glasses on to read the price label.
That will learn me = £9.99.
It is a big bag tho I guess.

Re: Bargain Basement
We were talking about macadamias last night on a foodie zoom call
Very expensive, but so rich they go a long way
In fact they are so rich I once made myself unwell by eating too many, and haven't really eaten them since, I should give them another chance

Yes, they are expensive, but soooo delicious! I haven't quite made myself sick from eating too many but can see I would, given the chance

Re: Bargain Basement
My recipe requires 150g, so they will indeed go a long way.
Usually, my default nut in a recipe is the delicious hazelnut, so I shall be keen to see what the macadamia is like (I'm making ginger and macadamia biscuits in the morning, and will update my thread).

Re: Bargain Basement
Macadamia are my absolute favourite nut, I brought a kilo back with me from Australia on our last trip.
I bought some this year for our Christmas cake. Ginger and macadamia biscuits sounds delicious.

You too, Busy.
I can't say I've ever noticed them before. I've certainly never bought them till now.

Re: Bargain Basement
Such a treat! Very envious. In Australia they use them as part of a crumb coating for fish which is absolutely delicious. A bit too expensive here for that .
Re: Bargain Basement
I went berserk last year and bought several types of nut for baking intentions. Most went stale before I got round to them even though kept in the freezer so a big bag should perhaps be enjoyed soonish rather than file and forget. Or is there a knack for keeping nuts fresh?
Re: Bargain Basement
We have a macadamia nut allergy in the family .
Although I have eaten them, I don’t ever remember seeing them for sale.
How about tiger nuts? I bought some recently to remember my childhood, but haven’t yet tasted them.

Re: Bargain Basement
Our local RHS garden centre had beautiful 6-10+ft Christmas trees, all reduced to £5. It was so-o-o tempting.
Re: Bargain Basement
I like McVities digestive biscuits. Tesco and Sainsbury do a twin pack. But you can get a four - pack of biscuits in Costco - Two packets of digestives and one each of HobNobs and Rich Tea for a few pence more than the the supermarket twin packs. If you like Hob Nobs and Rich Tea, they come very cheap!!
Re: Bargain Basement
I went to Costco earlier and they have some litre pots of fresh Chicken & Vegetable soup for 97p.
The best I've seen locally is the £1 for 600ml in the big supermarkets for Covent Garden and own brand offers.

Re: Bargain Basement
Not exactly bargain basement recommendation .... more a cleaning tip:
A few weeks ago, I was searching in my cupboards for something to spot clean my carpets.. not badly stained, just a few mysterious dark (muddy/Oily ??) patches.
I found a tub of Amor All (Car) Carpet and Seat wipes that I must have bought years ago, obviously for my car. I read that it is strong enough for Upholstery and Carpets, so thought I would try using a wipe to lift these spots/stains ... and it works brilliantly.
They are still available online (eBay)

Re: Bargain Basement
One that may be too late - last time I was in Morrison's I bought an 800g (double size) can of D'Oria plum tomatoes for 50p, they were very good. The space on the shelf was empty today but still there so fingers crossed
The odd thing is they don't seem to be Italian, despite the name - European but country unspecified, and I wondered if they were a return of the nice E European ones, mainly Maritsa Bulgarian, we used to get way back when

Re: Bargain Basement
I remember the Bulgarian tinned toms, mum used to prefer them to the Italian ones.
