it's a shame she ignored the red line. it was unfortunate (for her) that the editor had put a photo of a panettone box at the head of the article.

True, but not if you don't put dried fruit in if you don't want it in ;) If that makes it a slab cake, fine, a rose by any other name :) This one does looks like a slab piece and is definitely heavy on the cherries. NB the high price £8.40 includes delivery so about £3.50's worth for 350g:

Ok, that one does only have cherries in it :thumbsup , but the Tesco one is far more typical of those I have seen in the past, full of mixed dried fruit

Called slab cake because baked in vast trays then cut and sold by the piece or slab, either loaf size or individual slices, invariably to be found in old fashioned railway buffets

Eaten rathe rather a lot of it on the 18.24 from Waterloo

Love panettone, love stollen, love Christmas cake and Xmas pudding! And especially love Genoa fruit cake.

Dan Lepard had a very complicated sourdough/levain panettone recipe that absolutely got the better of me! Tried making it a few times but could never get it to be light and airy so gave up and reverted to bought.

It is WW. Found it the other day by accident while searching for Heston's oxtail and kidney puds recipe. Blog's still there but doesn't look like it's been added to for a while.

And the Stollen - might have to ...!

And Gill is still a follower!

Yes, I followed a few Beeb blogs back in the day.
Coincidentally, Zero, Richard has just followed me on Facebook about a month ago. I assume he's doing grand.

I don't really look at blogs any more, but I was besotted with them a decade ago.

Ghastly. I am so wary of processed meat (and these sort of places are usually rearing the animals for that purpose). Amazing how Nestle's name always turns up when there's something unpleasant even if they are only a small part of this.

I like loaf cakes. Has anyone ever tried the porridge loaf? 'Leftover' porridge isn't something I usually have.

Just in case she's too modest to post it, here is Suelle's version.

That’s got coconut in it! I know lemon and chocolate versions, both free of desiccated sawdust

Couldn't see the recipe for Suelle's but the Guardian one uses shredded coconut, not desecrated.
