System Upgrade

Postby Sakkarin » Thu Nov 18, 2021 10:05 pm

Demoted from sticky to normal post 23 Nov

Odd timing, I've just been notified that our webspace service providers will be upgrading the sytem on our webserver today.

They gave us initial warning some months ago, when I discussed it with Gill (back in July), as I had worries it might cause the board problems because we run on an old version of PHP code. They assured me that it wouldn't, however please bear with anything that happens in the next couple of days, the maintenance will probably be the reason.

Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.

I had a period of time yesterday when I couldn't get on to the website - wonder if they were doing anything then?

I had a hiccup myself, this thread posted itselftwice :-(

However right this moment the site seems (to me) to be running noticeably faster, let's hope that's the end result of the upgrade....

I'm not 100% confident we are completely out of the woods, but as of about an hour ago, according to the Heart Internet website our server update (server web95) has been completed, and we still seem to be here ("Past incidents, Nov 19th").

.
What does the update bring with it in terms of new or noticeable user interface/user experience (UX/UI) ? - any new stuff we can do/not do?

Nothing other than speed, it's the overall background operating system, the "software" remain the same (in quotes because the board runs on scripts).

It's like upgrading to a new version of Windows. The first issue is whether your old copy of Excel will run on it at all, then if it does the only difference you'll see is the speed it runs at.

My latest Mac's system actually slowed everything down, it's embarrassingly slow :-(

Fortunately this upgrade seems to have speeded the board up significantly, and the board still works!

EDIT: P.S. The webspace runs on Linux, not Windows or Mac. It's the Linux system that has been upgraded.
