dined well, if plainly, as a child)

Me too.

Sunday lunch was often a big beef stew, occasionally roast beef, lamb or pork.
No chicken as dad didn't eat birds. No idea why.
(Christmas dinner was turkey and pork. Dad only had pork.)

Tinned fried luncheon meat with chips and peas was a favourite.
So was mum's minced beef and onion plate pie, also served with chips and peas.
Macaroni cheese featured regularly, I expect because it's cheap and filling.

There wasn't much money.
Holidays were spent staying with relatives; I remember huge holes in the carpet, covered by rugs.

Party food is something where I've never progressed to anything 'modern'. Sausage rolls, pork pies, quiche, sandwiches and cocktail sausages etc always seem more popular than tiny spring rolls, samosas and mini Yorkshire puddings with a sliver of beef in them. :D

On the party good front (The last time we held a party was in 2009 in the garden...) Has anyone this year's promised M&S Christmas party food? They will be selling miniature cheesy beans on toast. I kid you not.

I am tempted by the 'molten cheddar cheese profiteroles'.

I did drool over some of their offerings herbi and did laugh at the cheesy beans on toast . Some of its ridiculously overpriced but other bits of it are very tempting . I’m with you on the butterscotch angel delight , used to love that as a kid and cheese and pineapple too .

I guess I define retro food, as food that seems to belong to a particular decade or era, that might seem slightly dated now . It’d be interesting to think what foods are eaten a lot if at the moment , that might appear retro in 20/30 years time . Thinking of things like like smashed avo on toast and pulled pork which seem to be everywhere but could be passé in the future

I'm waiting for Blancmange to make a comeback. And Shippams paste.

We can still get Shippams paste in Cyprus.
Tonight's supper is retro, Coq au Vin, except that I shall not use a whole chicken, just chicken thighs. Tomorrow it will be Chicken & Corn Chowder, is that retro?

I've been cooking from Ainsley Harriott's Meals in Minutes again recently which DS2 describes as retro. I suppose to him it is though as he was just a young boy when I first used it!
I have Shippams paste (in date) in the cupboard.

I doubt people's eyes would light up at the mention of Shipphams paste for tea now- or blancmange. It's hard these days to find things that are a real treat.

I still love Shipphams paste. It was always called 'meat jam' in my family. :yum

Still love prawns with avocado come to that. We often have it as a starter at Christmas.

Now that apart from tomatoes and pulses I eat much less canned food than we used to I find I've lost the ability to ignore the distinctive "canned" odour of some food, also applies to jars

Most things containing dairy or meat, including Shippham's paste have a whiff I don't like (good French pâté seems to be ok, but I think the pepper and garlic just overwhelm it)

One thing that used to be a bit of a treat were the canned French peas with baby carrots, so my friend and I got a can (not cheap) when last in Carrefour, and were very much underwhelmed

Canned fish is mainly ok, but I seem to remember avocado or prawn cocktail made with canned prawns, not something I'd bother with now

I thought avocado was trendy? I won't miss it when it's not.

I think filling avocado halves with prawns is retro, specially with canned prawns

Smashed avocado is trendy, especially on sourdough toast and topped with a poached egg

I do like avocados

My favourite way with avocado is sliced/mashed in a sandwich using a good wholemeal, seedy bread with sliced tomatoes and S&P :yum :yum :yum

I like them in their place, which is under a dollop of HM prawn cocktail.
Can you still get Sandwich spread?
I shall consult my Marguerite Patten cookbook tonight for suitable retro meals.

I've never had tinned prawns ... I wonder if I should try to do something about that
