T&T biscuit recipe please

Postby PatsyMFagan » Sun Jul 04, 2021 12:45 pm

I want to make some biscuits for next Sunday. Not just any old biscuit - these are to be Dinosaur shaped ones for daughter's 'step-nephew' - a joint tea party for Bobby and daughter - his is on Saturday and hers on Sunday ..

So, I need a biscuit recipe that will hold up to the cutting out and take some icing too, no special flavour ...

TIA xxx

Shortbread Patsy, easy to make and holds it's shape well would be my suggestion
I use a 3:2:1 ratio of plain flour, butter and caster sugar and it never fails me. Just remember to prick the tops so it doesn't bubble. 180C (fan) for 10-12 minutes. Keeps well in an airtight tin for a week.

I second the shortbread recommendation. So easy to cut out. I use a basic shortbread recipe for Christmas biscuits and they always come out well.

What a lovely thing to do Patsy! Please post pics of the dinosaur biscuits once made... :thumbsup

I've been using this recipe for more than 30 years, whenever I need a biscuit dough which won't spread:

Gingerbread biscuit dough is usually suitable too, or look at somewhere like BBC Good Food for recipes used to make Christmas biscuits.

Oooh, thanks for those suggestions ... Yes, will take some pics (that is if the cutters arrive in time ;)) ... I only ordered them yesterday, as that's when the idea popped into my head. Bobby who will be 3, has been obsessed with dinosaurs for most of his young life .. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Hope the cutters arrive in time Patsy :crossed , if not a "Blue Peter" job of some tracing paper shapes or a poundshop jigsaw might be an option as a template to cut around.

Those suggestions sound good. If the cutters do not arrive, check the poundshop or similar. If you can find egg-shaped cutters you can make Dinosaur eggs. :D

You can flavour any plain dough with some orange or lemon zest.

I’ve seen dinosaur cutters in Lakeland and Flying Tiger in the Harlequin in Watford.

the cutters arrived this morning... :thumbsup , but they seem quite small (about 8x6 cm) ??? - not in itself a problem unless I just can't manage the dough. As I have nothing else planned today, I think I will do a trial run ;) :thumbsup

As ltc said, you can always draw round a homemade cardboard template if all else fails! My mum used to do that with our Christmas shaped biscuits very successfully.

Not small at all. My favoured size is three to Five cm.

you might find the dough expands a little with cooking, depending on which recipe you use.

I use Nigella's shortbread recipe - she uses icing sugar instead of caster and they are incredibly short and melt in the mouth. They don't spread and are great for dinosaur biscuits which I make regularly for GS.

And here is today's experiment:

Those on the left were rolled out to 10mm thickness and those on the right to 6mm thickness ... more fragile :( The bits at the top are the remains of a shortbread round from the leftover dough. I don't have caster sugar, so blitzed granulated down and did wonder if I had made it too fine

Thanks :thumbsup ... I think they will do fine. And as it's daughter's birthday on Sunday, she has requested some cakes to take into work on Friday, her last shift this week .. I'm going to be busy on Thursday
