English asparagus

I know it’s market driven but how much are you paying? Is apparently £4.50 a bunch at Borough.

About that here
Had a conversation about it on Twitter, apparently it’s running late, should have hit us on 23 April in quantity but didn’t

I had my first English asparagus tonight. I got it in Tesco - can't remember exactly how much it was but definitely no more than £2.50. It was lovely too! Had it with steamed new potatoes and salmon in a shallot, prosecco, shrimp and cream sauce.

I bought my first in Sainsburys this week. £1.75 for 250g grown in Peru and £1.75 for 100g grown in Hampshire - hidden underneath. We had some tonight. It didn't seem to me to be quite the delicate new season stuff I'd expect so I don't know how they grow it but it was delicious.

Cobbs farm shop in Hungerford (Berkshire), which grows its own, is charging £6.99 for a bunch of 5-6 pieces. I'm afraid it doesn't excite me enough to pay that.

We have been eating local Cypriot asparagus for several weeks, we had it with pasta last night and are very fond of roast asparagus. It is cheaper than previous years, probably because the restaurants that would usually serve it are closed.

We’re planning to visit MIL in S Lincs tomorrow ... the route takes us past some asparagus fields ... most years there are roadside stalls selling freshly harvested bunches about now ... we’ll be taking a capacious cool bag and plenty of cash ... fingers crossed it’s not been too chilly

I bought some locally last week for £3.50 per bunch. It's definitely later than usual.

I wish it was ... like many veg farmers are contracted way ahead of time to supply the supermarkets for a stated price ... no matter what the weather conditions ... the supermarkets screw the farmers to the floor ... that's why veg are cheaper in supermarkets.

A fab bargain - was it the real price or rtc?

The poor farmer though, especially when you think of the prices M&S get away with. I wonder what a fair price is. The £6.99 I mentioned is for asparagus grown on the property and the shop is never cheap, I wonder how many people are really prepared to pay that even if it is the true cost.

I’ve never quite got the hype of asparagus. I don’t mind it and quite like it roasted but to me I’d quite easily swop it for green beans , tender stem broccoli etc

I really don’t get roasted asparagus - does anyone have a tried one tested method of getting it right?

I like plump stems of tender steamed asparagus, I’ve never seen the advantage in shrivelling or scorching it but I am prepared to be educated
