Ooni pizza oven (gas fired)

Postby Binky » Sat Apr 10, 2021 1:55 pm

Has anyone got or used one of these ovens? There are also wood-fired ones available but it's the gas one I am enquiring about. We are excited as we've bought one and it should be delivered in time for our wedding anniversary. Hopefully it will be warm enough to sit outdoors. :klingonbanana

Oooh - I'd love one of those! I'm sure I remember that someone on here was gifted one by her children(?) and was very pleased with it. Do let us know how you get on with it.

Oh yes, I'll definitely report back when we get the oven.

Annoyingly, when we bought the oven we also bought an Ooni table, cookbook, carrying bag and pizza peel (you need a peel to get the pizza in and out of the oven) but the confirmation note says 'unavailable' on the peel and the table. We can't do the pizzas until these arrive. We have a couple of garden tables but these are glass or plastic and so unsuitable for placing an oven on.

Lakeland has quite a lot of Ooni stuff and it looks to be in stock - could you cancel the order with Ooni and shop with Lakeland?

That's a good idea, Pampy.
You should be entitled to cancel non-available stuff and source it somewhere else.

I've seen these pizza ovens in Homebase and stared at them longingly.
And seen a larger one in action at one of those agricultural shows that has quirky garden and food stands to tempt, with a queue of people ordering.

I tried a sample, and the nutty semolina dusting underneath the crust was a revelation.
If it says in the instruction manual to sprinkle fine semolina on the peel - do so. It made the pizza taste delightful.

It's Lakeland where we ordered the pizza making kit. We are loyal to Lakeland as they always sell reliable, good quality things and honour their guarantees/refund policy without quibble. They also have a generous "20% off" running at the moment.

This delay is a bit of an aberration on their part, and when OH had a telephone conversation with them yesterday afternoon, they said the remainder of the order was on its way and would arrive later this week. I will get some fine semolina in anticipation ......

Ooh how exciting!

Ten years ago I'd have been very very tempted, as opposed to just tempted.

It would be a really nice thing to have in France... (where we also have neighbours we are friendly enough with to invite round...)

I'll second that!!

I always use semolina to "lubricate" the pizza base - I find it much better than flour.

Oh no.
I've been looking at the lakeland microwave toastie maker. I'm not even eating bread at the moment, but I really want one.

Get a grip, Gillthepainter! ;) The worst toastie I've ever eaten was in a resort in Spain. We just wanted a quick bite from the only cafe around and couldn't believe how dismal it was. (Soggy, thin stripe with squashed edges.) Talk about giving English food a bad name. Perhaps check the toastie return options? ;)

Mind you, I covet a furnace-hot pizza oven or salamander, as we all do in the expectation that the home pizza result will be exactly what you think a pizza should be.

A celeb guest or someone on TV was attempting to shunt pizza from a peel to the oven (of a pizza master) and had to have several goes at getting the pizza off successfully. An extremely fast arm jerk(?) - maybe the sliding-off knack is something to practise on a cold oven methinks having watched the guest's woefulness at his mangled pizza failure attempts.

The worst toastie I ever had was at a bar PMU (the ones with the betting) in France. It came pre-made in a factory in an envelope made out of the same stuff as roasting bags and had been semi-cremated in a toaster oven.

We love ours and wouldn't be without it.
They say that you can also use them for chicken etc but tbh we've really only wanted sandwiches.
Since we got ours they've brought out a bigger one that I think does two full-sized sandwiches at the same time. But we're very happy with ours.

Is it all bread that you're not eating at the moment or just wheat/gluten?

Do you mean this Gill? https://www.lakeland.co.uk/26373/L%C3%A ... wave-Grill
I've had one for a while - it's so quick and easy to use. A good buy.

That's exactly the one we've got, Pampy :thumbsup

Have you ever used it for anything other than sarnies?

No - just sarnies. I keep thinking I'll try it with a chicken fillet - I'd probably flatten it to make sure it's cooked through. Might be good for thing like bean burgers too because they can tend to break up if you fry them.

Ha ha, no - we had some left over from last night and a fresh bottle today. We are on our third pizza now and they just get better.
