Postby carrotdill » Tue Mar 16, 2021 3:29 pm

I found an old recipe that includes one packet of cakeoma.
what was cakeoma was it a premade cake mix, scone mix,
cake flour or something else. I figured out size of a packet was
16oz but i am still not sure of what contents of packet were.

I have never heard of that It doesn’t sound like something we had in England within my memory

Ha - found it - it’s simply a British brand of cake flour, long gone

thanks sue now i can try all the cake and pudding recipes in the cakeoma
recipe leaflet I just got.
I always hate recipe with some old brand that is obscure about what it is;
because nailing down what you are dealing with tough given
many really old recipes assume certain knowledge that you
many not be able to find on the internet.
the libraries that may hold that knowledge are closed due
to covid; it just adds to the list of things that have wait till covid restrictions end.

this advert hints that it was a cake mix (without egg powder!) not just flour, so maybe self raising. (would it have had sugar in?).

is this one of your war leaflets collection?

I am not surprised it was withdrawn from the market. Who on earth would buy something with the suffix -oma?

Oma denotes tumours and abnormal growth e.g. lipoma, carcinoma etc.

It could have been intended to be along the lines 'cake of ma' i.e. like a homemade one.

I'm not sure the -oma suffix was in general use back then - perhaps only in medical circles. People tended to whisper about 'growths' and 'lumps' and didn't really even use the word 'cancer'.
