sounds like the sultana pastry is more like a Chorley cake.

Yep, that's probably what I meant.

I'm with all on the cup cakes and especially the icing. Yuk, almost always far, far, far too sweet - but then when you look at the proportion of sugar to butter in most recipes it's entirely predictable!!

Trifle - I can really take it or leave it, preferably leave if it is a sherry trifle. Not sure when that came on (I used to love trifle sponge cakes when I was little, can you still get them??)

Pork crackling - I value my teeth too much!

I see your Lancashire pastries and I raise you a Banbury Cake

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/banbury-cakes

We used to buy them from the bakery in Banbury as we drove through quite often, and my mum made them to use up any leftover pastry

I like a good sticky brownie personally, at least it's moist and strongly flavoured, unlike all those sponge cake things

My mother loved Fuller's walnut cake, but it was as dry as the Sahara on the second day

Had a think.......Chocolate!
There are about five blue moons here when I eat it - dark, dark & even darker - hits the spot, but couldn't be eating/craving it any other times.

Luciouslush, we exiled Yorkshirepersons dote on Betty's cakes, especially the Fat Rascals and Yorkshire Curd Tarts.

We have regular shipments from Harrogate as Essex is full of ruffians who can't make a decent curd tart.

I haven’t been in the central Harrogate Bettys for years, but have been in the one in RHS Harlow Carr fairly regularly before the 1st lockdown. Whilst the actual produce is, in my opinion, as good as ever, I don’t think the service and overall ambience is anywhere near as good as the York outlets.

The main big Bettys in York is my favourite. I have their afternoon tea cook book and the recipes are spot on.

I'm a bit late to the party but I agree with chicken wings and would also add ribs.
I'm fine with meat on the bone, but when it's mostly bone it's a pain and I also can't stand having sticky hands/face when I'm eating.
Again, I agree with the cupcakes, style over substance, though to be fair I don't have a sweet tooth.

I don't get the love for pomegranates, all seedy and just not that great really

:klingonbanana Sorry, but having eaten Ellis Barrie's food a few times, it is over rated, expensive and miniscule. And very little choice. Never again.
Chard seems to feature everywhere. Not my cup of tea.
And edited to add, anything sweet other than eccles cakes is also overxrated!

I went to Betty's in Harrogate a few years ago, a highlight of a stay in York with a friend. We didn't go into the York one because it was always packed when we went past. The food and cakes were delicious but the whole experience felt rather more like a cattle market than a genteel tea, with coachloads being herded in and out and much of the furniture being fairly utilitarian. No real ambience.

I went to to Betty's in Ilkley in the mid-1990s. Even that far back, I seem to remember it being quite commercialised. The tables were very close together and the staff seemed to want you to throw the food down and leave as quickly as possible. I did enjoy the cakes though!

Overrated for me? Hamburgers (I know! Some people just love them), steak (so many peoples' favourite, too), things en croute, fois gras and truffles. Can't be doing with truffles

Good sausages and good pies, Gill? What's not to like! :D

Ditto pomegranates, MM!

I find steak a bit overrated too, I mean I do like it, but I hardly ever buy it as its just a bit, well blah.
I think the last time I ate it was in a restaurant for my Daughter's 18th which was a year and a half ago.
It was a great steak, and a lovely meal but I chose the restaurant for her as she adores it.
As nice as it was, I preferred the soft shell crab starter I had!

Mind you, I used to feel similar about asparagus and I've grown to love it so you never know...

Haven’t been to Betty’s in Ilkley but I do prefer the York one to Harrogate. Having said that a couple of years ago I went for an afternoon tea with DD as a Mother’s Day treat. You have to book in advance and it was in a lovely room upstairs with a pianist playing. A much more relaxed affair.
Quite like the one at Harlow Carr.
