I saw that in the late 50's, we were living in Yorkshire at the time and went to Scarborough on holiday.
Also I went on a Sunday School trip to Filey, we got stuck on Filey Brig by the tide and had to be rescued. We were rescued by a chap in a rowing boat so it was not exactly dramatic. I bet that boatman made a few extra bob most summer weekends rescuing idiots who took children out there.

Sea, it’s a very small world at times.

We were there in 1969 and 1970!! I have one of those Butlins key ring photos too but mine consists of me sitting on Frank Carson's knee. You'd never get away with it now would you? :D

I remember when Chris was in the RAF Central Band they did a gig with Frank Carson - no, I can’t imagine what that was all about either - but they all liked him immensely.

Needless to say the jokes were very blue.....!

  would have been luxurious compared to cramming the family into a small tent in the rain which is what we did when the children were small!

I think the “smaller “ restaurant with the glass walls might be the camp I worked in, though 10 years on the waitresses had gone, and you queued for counter service.

Intrigued by the bit on Club Med in its early days. By the time I saw one on Corfu in the 80s the grass huts had gone and it was a big concrete hotel, decorated with pseudo Greek classical statues - copies of Rodin. The gardens were stunning and so were the drink prices.

Did that for a great number of years. I think the most successful holiday after those days was at Center Parcs.

Yep. We did Center Parcs right from the early days. Anyone remember the unique Dutch toilets?

Very, very expensive these days.

One of the, not very bright, guys in the office announced that he was going on a Club 18-30 holiday. We convinced him that he wasn't eligible because he was 23 years old. The reason being that Club 18-30 was for girls 18 and under, and men of 30 and older!! :D It took him a while to catch on...

i've never been to a 'holiday camp' as such but i have been on a cruise ship - which i thought might be similar but from which you can't escape.

hmm, i had to google that. it seems to be a loo with an 'inspection shelf' rather than the poo going straight into the waste pipe. i can see that it would be useful if you have to take a 'sample' - i'm surprised they don't have them in hospitals over here, at least.

Oh, I was wondering what a Dutch toilet was, I don’t remember them on my one visit to Center Parcs but I might not have specially noticed them being quite used to them, they crop up all over Europe in my experience, though usually in buildings rather older than CP

I think our first Berlin offices (on top of a shopping mall) had them, though oddly the office suites in the hospital didn’t
