Exactly why I loathe self catering, I’d rather stay at home to be honest.

You are right EM, standards have risen but I can’t get the cast off beds and sofas that used to populate holiday homes out of my head. When I’m paying the cost of a replacement kidney I expect comfy beds and seating as a minimum. Our now cancelled fortnight in Cornwall in September was costing around £3000 and whilst it looked very nice it wasn’t exceptional. That’s a lot of B and B’s or nights in a hotel where I don’t have to make my own bed, shop and cook and then clean it all before I leave.

I’ve never had a U.K. welcome pack but it rings true around the Med, honourable mention to one villa company we’ve used several times who make sure you have a basic breakfast (bread, jam, milk, juice, cheese) and a bottle of local plonk

Perhaps the Alain Ducasse is better KC2.It struck me that the Polo Lounge is for those who like to be seen - but not seen to be eating. Excellent review.

Prices for British holidays are extortionate this year, aren't they! I hope that £3000 accommodation is spacious, luxurious and designed for a large group.

I think the Alain Ducasse will be very different KC2, I’ve not been there but went several times to the Pierre Kaufman at the Grovesnor and once to Helene Darroze at the Connaught and they were very much what you’d expect from the name over the door.

Thought the review of the Polo was very good - it sounded like the food you get in American hotels aimed at business travellers, but you don’t mind there because it costs very little (even if you are spending your own $) and you can get an excellent Martini the size of a foot bath for not very much

Back in his RAF days my OH often performed routines at the Dorchester. I could never understand why anyone would book a marching band for an evening entertainment.

Lunch with Clare Smyth. Alain Ducasse gets a mention.

Been meaning to say, as Felicity makes so many appearances in this thread, her book One More Croissant for the Road was a R4 Book of the week recently, read by Sophia di Martino, and it's available on Sounds for most of August

I’ve just listened to the audiobook version of One More Croissant for the Road. Very enjoyable!
