Not happy with your bread? It’s time for bread and butter pudding!

Don’t think you'd like the salt! Made croutons with mine.
ZeroCook, my first loaf was my second attempt. The first would be a good contender for Victorian Gruel of the year.

I tried making that some time ago - I remember liking it as a child but I and really don't like it now!
OH and I agreed that soggy bread is just not our thing!!

Bread and butter pudding can actually be really delectable - need a hot oven to get it to puff up and de-sog - haven't made it for donkey's ears and there are also Italian versions that are very good and very crispy on the top and edges - nutmeg, cinnamon and that sort of thing and chopped crystallised orange peel with bits of dark chocolate. Very southern Italian. Mr0 isn't a big dessert fan so U No Hoo would end up scoffing most of it
Excellent idea, croutons, Dennis.
I went looking for an Italian bread pudding and found this - very interesting savoury bread pudding with cheese, eggs, tomatoes, garlic, herbs

Back in the days when we had plenty of milk, butter and all things bad for us, nothing better than a puffed up Brioche and Marmalade B&B pudding.

Or a traditional cheese pudding like this http://www.essentially-england.com/cheese-pudding.html ?
I love it baked with sliced tomatoes on the top.

Thanks for that LTC - must say I've never come across cheese pudding before. One to try.
Brioche and marmalade b & b pud sounds too good.

Re: What are you baking this week?
Hi all, have just made a (half) batch of "Cheat's Portuguese custard tarts" from a Good Housekeeping recipe in last month's mag. It is very easy - readyrolled puff pastry plus a carton of fresh custard - and very successful, I'm glad to report!
I only made 6 (well 7, as there was a bit of extra pastry) and next time i think the same quantities will make 8 or 9, as the pastry is a bit thicker than it needs to be - but then my pack was a bit larger than the one they used, 375g instead of 320g. And it could be that my muffin tins were a bit smaller. The full recipe with a 375g pack of pastry would definitely make more than 12, even with slightly deeper muffin tins.
I lined all but one with a base disc as I didn't want them to stick - but actually the one i didn't line came out fine, so I may not bother next time.
I don't know if I'm permitted to post a pic of the recipe - happy to if it's allowed.
Big and recommendation, and so much less faff than making them "properly"!

Were they a good substitute for the real thing KC2?
I'd love a pic of the recipe if it's ok.

Re: What are you baking this week?
They look very good indeed, KC2! As mentioned on another thread, I'm dying to know if it is just custard added to the tartlet cases which evaporates in the oven or if you add extra egg.

Re: What are you baking this week?
These look very good KC2, custard tarts in any guise are one of my exceptions to not usually having a sweet tooth.
I've made the Jamie Oliver version from 30 minute meals but if ready made custard works I'd definitely go for that https://www.food.com/recipe/jamie-olive ... rts-525922

I have made a golden syrup cake this afternoon....pretty sure I've posted here before about this cake.
I'm getting together with an ex-colleague on Saturday for al fresco coffee and cake, I needed to make a cake today so chose this one as it improves with time.

Well, they're different - but we both felt they're a good sub and were very happy with them. OH says he likes them every bit as much as bought ones - depending of course, on where you're buying them! Clearly no comparison with Lisboa https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restauran ... gland.html
The ones with a few blueberries in were delicious.
I'll definitely make them again with a few changes.
No, no extra eggs, EM, just the custard.
Can one of the mods please tell us if I can post the recipe?
Re: What are you baking this week?
I like that idea. There's a lot of faff separating eggs and stuff.

Re: What are you baking this week?
Hmm! I think that I can remember that!
Pastry is the same as the other ones I make, then add the spiced custard. The hardest part will be remembering to buy the custard…

They look really good. Interested to see lemon zest. Do the Portuguese ones usually contain lemon?
