I have used two recipes, both contain some lemon. They also have vanilla in the custard, but the cinnamon is sprinkled on the top.

Tarts look very good KC2. And no one can outdo Cafe Lisboa :D

Crumble cakes part 2. Made Suelle's Apple and Cranberry cake with adaptions. Had a big bag of frozen prepped apple slices in the freezer that needed using, about twice what the recipe said, which I spread out flat after a little further cooking with some butter and a good squeeze of lemon juice (slightly like a tart filling to cut more easily), mixing with the cinnamon etc on the bottom layer. Forgot to build the little wall but hey. No dried cranberries, used raisins and giant sultanas, reduced the sugar as per most dessert recipes I make and subbed with ground almonds and a few drops of almond extract which worked well. Not as pretty as Sue's, but very tasty and like the method a lot :D

That looks amazing, Zero.
I do like an almond style tart or cake.

Great Portuguese tarts, KeenCook. Nicely done.

Zero - looks super. The method has quite a lot in common with PP's incredibly successful and delicious blueberry crumble cake - I'm thinking of trying one with apple and blueberries ...

I finished off the rest of the packet of pastry yesterday with the rest of the custard. I made 9 tarts, so the pastry was a bit thinner, which was an improvement, as I'd hoped it would be. I again base lined most of the tarts, as I didn't want the pastry to stick, but probably didn't need to. I should be a bit more adventurous next time and not line any of them.

They are firmly in the repertoire now! Providing I remember to get the custard. I often have pastry in the fridge and always find it lasts far beyond its use by date.

That apple and cranberry cake looks like it would be lovely warmed up with some custard

Thanks folks. Too good actually. I might have to freeze some as I made it without a crowd or occasion in mind - Mr0 likes it a lot but he only eats desserts at dessert time. I'm being the main culprit and it's big - but I keep 'straightening' it out  :?

Did custard, too Amy! Mr0 is partial :D

Very similar to PP's blueberry crumble cake, KC2 - and yes blueberry and apples crossed my mind too! Do post if you do it :D I also thought rhubarb would be good - now there's the classic custard partner, Amy - and Suelle has a rhubarb version. Could get dangerous unless made for a crowd or scaled down.

I have some Bramleys I feel like using today, do you think the/a version of apple crumble cake would work? Otherwise I'll just do a normal crumble.

Thank you kindly, KC2 - it looks likes something that would be a big hit round here. :D

And I see Suelle posted some comments on there but couldn't find it in the the Mainly Baking blog - did you ever make it, Sue?

Aha, just realised who Mummylark is - thanks!

Scones, cream and strawberries sound very good, Aero.

I make something very similar, but not using polenta. The filling can be varied according to taste, as long as it's not too juicy, and nuts can be added to the topping, as in this recipe, but are optional too:

Just re-read your comments, Suelle, and I think the Bramleys should be fine ...!!

The cake looks a huge success KC2. That recipe is quite versatile by the look of it.

Yes, the Bramleys were fine. I could probably have put more in - I used about two-and-a-half, which I figured was roughly the same as three eating apples.

It's a great recipe - yes, exceedingly versatile, EM :thumbsup

Finishing off a courgette, basil and feta quiche tonight - made the pastry too thin so it leaked into the (fortunately) ceramic quiche dish, but tasted delicious,

Just back from a round trip to hospital in St Albans, for a check-up, and a church in Northwood where OH was giving a lunchtime concert. While she was there I popped down the road to Tesco, and I have some tins of custard! :D

Ah, it'll be interesting to see if they work with the tins as well as the pots of "fresh" .... look forward to hearing as and when and if you get round to it

Well, I made a batch of the Cheat Tarts with the tinned custard. They look OK, they taste OK, but the custard didn't thicken, so when you bit them, the filling oozed out and made them difficult to eat. So I will probably go back to the old recipe.

That's what I wondered about when KC2 first posted the recipe - but the ones made with fresh bought custard sounded alright so it must be thicker to start with. They look delicious all the same!

Aero, they look terrific!
It's worth trying once with a pot of "fresh" custard rather than a tin before abandoning the easy option altogether!
It did work for me!
