Apparently squirrel is a popular and delicious ingredient in chilli in some parts of the US, according to incidental references in TV progs. No reason to doubt that even if it might not be everyone's first choice.

I imagine Betty Crocker scan the mix for shot pellets since dentistry ani't cheap ;) Grey squirrels are considered a nuisance here. It's provoked a vision of people here scampering around with strengthened butterfly nets.

What was the show with Jilly Goulden etc, on ITV. The Best Cook or something like that.
Someone served up squirrel, which she would not touch - good on her, it's not an endurance.
And the 2 other judges tried it, confirming she was right to dodge the tasting.

It tastes a bit like rabbit, but I prefer the latter and you'd need a few squirrels for a good dinner. In the interest of reducing the UK population of invasive American species perhaps someone should start selling a squirrel & crayfish pie, like the rabbit and crayfish one that Mark Hix won GBM with a few years ago. :D

Ah yes I remember that Stargazy pie well. I had a bash at it myself but got a bit confused, must have had the recipe upside down...

He looks like he is eating a carrot.

Crayfish give me the creeps I'm afraid.
I can eat prawns, big prawns, small prawns, raw prawns, but crayfish - noooooo can do.

THe problem with crayfish, for me, is that they´re very fiddly to eat. By the time I´ve got halfway through, I´m bored stiff! :crying2

I went to the local wetlands centre (Woodberry) and a young man pointed out cray fish in the water. Couldn’t see it of course but an American signal crayfish from his description :(I

I don’t mind them, but they don have s lot of flavour IMO. If I get any more I’ll try cooking them for a shorter time in less water

There are a rarity here but can be found especially in the spring. They are not the American ones and considered to be a delicacy - possibly should be on the posh food thread!!

Many years ago we went out with some friends who had a dog and it loved the water. We were going along a gorge with a small stream running through. The dog - called Chinon, suddently strted yelping and we found him with an ecrevisse firmly attached to his tail

Crayfish are known as River Crabs here in some regions of Spain ( nothing similar to Usa crayfish ) and they are a delicacy when in season ..

They are semi sweet, red, relatively small & delectable .. They are served at Tapas Bars during season too ..

But with certain fish the little cheeks are delicious. I'm not bothered at all by the fish eyes I've encountered so far but would be more intimidated by something such as a sheep's eye.

We had a meal at a remote island in Greece.
The sheep bits would have troubled the most robust eater, inclusive of headly bits.
We just ate the chips, but spied a woman at another table "hiding" pieces in a bag in her handbag. As if she'd eaten them.

And of course the owner came round and asked if she wanted more ...... well we knew that would happen.

Nothing like whole fried in chickpea flour " boquerones " ( fried fresh anchovies ) !

They are the divinity of The Andalusian Coast ..

It is the only fish off top of Think Cap, that I eat whole ..
