I grew some alstroemeria, Ligtu hybrids, once from seed

As instructed I planted 24 seeds in a half tray, cold shocked them for three weeks in the freezer, germinated on a window sill and potted on

I got 20 plants to put out in the garden.

Took the assorted Gastropoda 4 days to reduce them to little stumps, I think two survived :(

You might have been better off putting the molluscs in the freezer

There are promotions available on the Lavazza website.

Brilliant.
Thanks Pampy. I've just ordered a stash (free delivery over £40).

Picked up a bargain from Iceland, £1 for 10 MEDIUM free range eggs. I thought they were rather chunky , and on weighing them when I got home, they are all 65g plus (Large is 63 gms and over).

The eggs I normally buy are Tesco large eggs, as their medium ones seem to have shrunk these days. I weighed the two Tesco eggs I had left in their box, and they were 61.5g and 62.5g respectively, in other words Tesco LARGE eggs are smaller than the Iceland medium eggs. Hmm.

Not a reduction but a revelation!

I don't visit Waitrose very often as there isn't a proper local one, however I happened to end up next to one in my travels and popped in.

Here's my verdict: Waitrose Essentials Plain Chocolate Digestives (90p for 400g) are better than McVities.

I'll check out their brandy then, as I've run out, and use it in a few sauces.

Sakks, Waitrose essential range is great.
It's my local, that I can walk to on the way home.

They were going to build a Waitrose near me on the site of an old gasometer, but they changed their mind and now it's going to be a Lidl.

Are there any gasometers left? They used to be a common sight, although it always struck me that they were the most enormous accidents waiting to happen. I wonder where they store all that gas now.

EDIT: Good grief, they turn them into posh flats!

Wow! Those are very posh Sakks! I think that there's one in Chorley still.

But they still look like gasworks!

In Kew, they converted the victorian sewageworks to 750 luxury houses. Which were all bought up by winter.
Walking down by the river, the sewage smell was overpowering in summer!

The water pumping station for the New River, which used to be the way water came into London, was converted to a climbing centre, and the reservoir behind to wildlife centre.

There are new flats alongside the reservoir too

Going back to bargains, I’ve bought my annual £1 bottle of golden syrup, often cheap around pancake day.

Good grief, further to the news that Lidl are building a store 5 minutes walk from me, I've just read that Aldi are opening a store too, in the old "Toys'arent'us" premises, nearly opposite the Lidl site!

However they are a little shy about confirming exactly when it will open, so maybe it's just a ploy.

It will be interesting having both the Aldi and Lidl stores close by! I wonder which the favourite will be? I guess that Tesco will be a lot quieter than usual!

Our new Lidl store is now open on the A6. I went into nearby Asda on Friday and it seemed quiet.

There's an Aldi and Lidl quite close together where I live - both are nearly always busy. There's also another 2 Aldi's in the town which also seem to get high footfall.

"Jacks" is creeping into Tesco. I just bought "Jacks" orange juice for 55p compared to their standard cheapo which is 80p.

EDIT: P.S. "Jacks" is Tesco's brand that is attempting to compete with Aldi and Lidl.

Apart from that I've only ever been to one Aldi, and didn't really think it was as good as Lidl. That was years ago, when I think it was Renee recommended a coffee there, which I didn't realise was ground rather than beans, but it wasn't in stock anyway :-(

I buy an excellent Australian Shiraz Cabernet wine from Aldi which is £4.09. A great bargain which has excellent reviews.

I buy a freerange chicken from there occasionally. A good sized one is about £5.70ish.

I find Aldi and Lidl are good for different things

Sadly both have anglicised their offerings, and are less good than they were for German deli

Aldi very good for English veg at bargain prices, coffee, wine

Both good still for deli meat, cheese, olive oil, nuts, pulses. Lidl Nixe canned sardines my absolute favourite and cheap.
