Green tea/Matcha query

Post by Binky »

I think that green tea in silky bags is not the same as matcha powdered green tea.

Does anyone know if we grind the contents of the green tea bags (authentic green tea brought back as a gift to us from friends visiting Japan) we can make matcha powder? Matcha ice cream beckons you see. :D

According to Wiki matcha is specially grown in the shade, and powdered green tea will be more bitter, as well as a less vivid green, so possibly not ideal for ice cream.

But I don’t consume tea, so secondhand knowledge.

Thanks for that info StokeySue.

Seeing as the tea was free, all it will cost us is the price of a couple of cups of milk and a cup of cream (it's an American recipe but they're using proper matcha). It's worth an experiment.

The weather looks to be deteriorating soon, so it might be a while before this ice-cream is made but I will post up the results.

Hey Binky, yeah, green tea bags and matcha are two different things. Unfortunately, grinding the tea leaves from the bags won't give you matcha powder. The flavor and texture would be off. If you want to make matcha ice cream, it's best to use actual matcha powder. You can find it at Asian grocery stores or online. Worth the investment for the real deal!
