Some of the Eastern Mediterranean recipes are remarkably authentic, before they got "simplified"

Some of these were acquired from eBay much later.

The Middle Eastern and Mediterranean ones were favourites. The Spanish one is good too.
One of the vegetarian ones has a recipe for a three coloured vegetable terrine that they used to sell ready made in Sainsburys in the deli. (Remember Sainsbury's delis?!? Maybe some still have them. Not ours...) It was rather nice.

I had lots of the Sainsburys books. Have culled most of them now.

Anything containing green peppers or aubergines was 'exotic' before the mid 70s I think. I wonder why no courgettes? My mother grew them in the garden (as well as marrows) as long ago as I can remember. Perhaps they weren't sold in many places.

I would guess so if you are 'a reader' if that's the correct term. Is there anything in particular you are searching for?

I do have a reader’s card but it now needs to be changed because of the cyberattack.
No it was just a comment on how not very useful the BL collection is at the moment should one want to browse it as much of their collection cannot be accessed and a lot requires in person ordering a day or two in advance using slips of paper.

I agree ratatouille is an odd choice with roast meat, I’d serve cold meat the next day with ratatouille and a jacket spud maybe but not the actual hot dinner.

I think I probably had ratatouille in France before I had it in England, but when I arrived in London in 1972 it was a thing in places like Cranks and “bistros” like the Stockpot and Bistingo.

But I’ve checked my cookbooks on Eat your Books - Constance Spry (1953) gives two recipes, David and Grigson give multiple recipes through the 1950s and 1960s, The Pauper’s Cookbook early 70s gives a recipe. Don’t know where you’d have got aubergines and peppers in many places in England for the earlier recipes

Just home from an excellent lunch at the Victory Services Club, near Marble Arch. I was a guest of a member.

I had Spiced Butternut Squash soup, Steak and Kidney Pudding and a fresh fruit salad. One of the others was complimentary about his salmon. The other meals looked good too.

It was, and it was "quite big". The pudding crust was not stodgy. Nor was it crusty.

The fruit salad was substantial too. I only photographed the final course...

roast aubergine half with vegan pesto (I think, no 'cheese' involved, vegan or otherwise) with caponata. This was all very vegetably and not much protein or obvious carbs, so although very nice, it was not very filling. Therefore... I felt I could justify
Pear and apple crumble.

Probably won't have dinner and didn't have breakfast.

Ended up eating in an increasingly popular Cafe Nene in Beckenham. I had shakshuka. It was very nice indeed.
I had quite bad knee pain, though, last night having not had any for a while, and this was probably the first time I've eaten tomatoes in a week... which it feels was the last time I ate tomato. I really must do some more controlled observations regarding tomatoes and knee pain. I had hoped it was just raw ones if any that set it off.

Sunday lunch with friends.

3 or 4th visit to The Crown in Hartest - they have two more places in or near Bury St Edmunds.

Beautifully cooked roast beef and a lot of it. Pork looked good too. The yorkies are huge. I had a double portion of the mussels starter for a main. All super and the staff and excellent.

Yesterday we were out and about near New Milton and Ringwood. I researched the Fish Inn in Ringwood for lunch after a house viewing and I had Bubble and Squeak Benedict, Wiltshire ham, poached eggs, hollandaise, watercress but the watercress was missing. It was delicious, I was ravenous (only a banana for brekkie). B&S could have been a bit crisper but the flavour was good. OH had aubergine and other veg curry and rice, he thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice surroundings too. Great staffing.

Not often I post on this thread, but today I had afternoon tea at the Bull Hotel in Gerrard's Cross with the Fitsteps Girls. Our excuse was that it was our instructor's birthday last Saturday.

Delicious and not a bad price at £29 per head.

Saw a LR Discovery in the car park with reg plate OSO...that was all. Bet that cost a small mortgage
