pyrex casserole dishes ...
I cackhandedly put a pyrex lid away in the cupboard the other day; it's below the kitchen work surface so slightly awkward access.
As friends on the chatter thread know, I have a trapped nerve that means I don't have full use of my l hand and the damn thing just slipped ...
It came as part of a three dish set, small, medium and large. We absolutely don't need any more dishes, but you can't get a lid without a dish. I use it all the time.
They are sold by capacity. I thought that 1.6 ltr was right, but only 1.5 ltr actually fits in the dish. However, I daresay with the lid, it is probably 1.6 ltr.
What do you all think? Does the capacity include the lid?
Thx! Confused of W6!
ETA I think this was probably the set I bought originally https://www.argos.co.uk/product/1455379 ... lsrc=aw.ds

Rather than risk buying something the wrong size, couldn't you just use foil for a lid (in a conventional oven), or a plate (in the microwave)?

I don't know about capacity but could you try eBay for a lid?

There is a 24cm one on eBay which would probably fit the middle dish but would probably be cheaper to get a new whole thing.

yes, I have got a plastic MW lid, which has vents - and would sit over it. I mainly use it in the MW - for stewing apples and poaching salmon.
The three dishes stack perfectly so you're right, suelle, risky to get the wrong thing as we have quite limited storage.

The trouble is people break the lids not the dishes, because they slide off and crash. Except my friend’s family who had a bad habit of slamming the dishes onto the Aga - we did a sort out so she and each ended up with casseroles with lids.
This means you don’t stand much chance of finding a stray lid in a charity shop unfortunately, though worth a look if you are in one.
Not sure what to suggest, I thought you might find them in supermarkets but can’t find them listed

How annoying! Worth looking in charity shops for a similar sized dish. Even the patterned ones have clear lids.

I did once break one of the big ones - 4.5 litre oval or ‘chicken roaster’. The family were coming over for Sunday dinner, I had raised the dish and left it to drain on the rack. It slipped off onto the concrete kitchen floor. It went everywhere, took ages to find all the shards. The now spare lid makes a nice roasting pan.The trouble is people break the lids not the dishes

Many many many years ago in a previous life … in a moment of extreme frustration and exasperation to put it mildly … I intentionally dropped a large Pyrex bowl full of homemade coleslaw onto a hard floor … it sort of exploded in a myriad shower of small sparkling fragments, cabbage, carrot and mayo … it certainly focussed “someone’s” mind dramatically and the shenanigans ceased … for a while ….
Not something I’ve ever felt the need to do again thankfully … and no … I was not the one who cleared it up …

Excellent Suffs!
I used to make Yorkshire Pudding in a Pyrex dish. Did it successfully umpteen times. On the day we had guests it exploded when the cold mixture hit the hot fat - all over the cooker and surrounding area in the days of hotplates so it all seeped in and shards of glass everywhere - and three adults and two children all tried to 'help'. I've stuck to making it in tins since then!

T broke 3 of them during lockdown when we had a bit of an avalanche from the cupboard. Not replaced as still had some left. I did wonder if I might have a spare lid, but can't find one, I'm afraid. I do use them quite a bit.
I am afraid this thread had me buying a 1960s one with snowflakes similar to one my mother had on eBay.

haha, Herbi
I remember your cupboard coming off the wall, if that was the avalanche you're talking about.

Re: pyrex casserole dishes ...
have you tried looking on facebook marketplace - there's a plethora of cheap pyrex casseroles etc in our area - maybe similar for yours.

Actually no. This was a separate incident in which only pyrex dishes were broken. The wall cupboard contained all our crockery, glassware and mugs... and some honey and olive oil
Both happened during a lockdown though. We had to get a skip to sort out the wall cupboard. We never replaced it. Three 'temporary' shelves, the supportive status of which I check regularly!
